Each term we send out information to parents regarding the curriculum learning journey your child will follow. We hope this will help parents to support children at home. This term in Reception the main focus for your child’s learning will be as follows…
Communication & Language/ • To sit quietly and concentrate during appropriate activity.
· To listen and respond to instructions.
· To listen and respond to ideas expressed by others in conversation or discussion.
· To use more complex sentences when speaking.
· To extend vocabulary, especially by grouping and naming, exploring the meaning and sounds of new words.
· To ask questions using the words who, what, when and how.
How you can help
· Encourage your child to answer questions which start with What? Why? Where? How?
· Encourage your child to use more complex sentences when speaking
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
/ · To resolve conflicts with other children.
· To play co-operatively with friends.
· To speak confidently to others about own needs, wants, interests and opinions.
· To be aware of the rules and follow these.
How can you help
· Allow your child opportunity to share their thoughts in different environments
· Ask your child about their friends in reception
Literacy
/ · Hears and says the initial sound in words
· Links sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet.
· To begin to read simple words.
· Gives meaning to marks they make as they draw, write and
paint.
· To write own name correctly and begin to write simple words for e.g cat and bat.
How you can help
· Allow your child to practise writing their name with correct letter formation
· Read with your child and discuss the events
Maths
/ · To recognise numbers 1 to 10.
· To count up to 20.
· To say the number that is one more or one less than a given number.
· To identify 2d and 3d shapes.
· Can describe their relative position such as ‘behind’ or ‘next to’.
How you can help
· Point out numbers in shops, door numbers, buses etc.
Physical Development
/ For health and safety reasons, jewellery such as watches and stud earrings must be removed for PE lessons. If your child finds it difficult to take earrings out and replace them, it may helpful if they do not wear them on PE days.
· To experiment with different ways of moving.
· To jump off an object and land appropriately.
· To travel with confidence and skill around, under, over and through balancing and climbing equipment.
· To use tools effectively for e.g a pencil and scissors.
· To eat a healthy range of food.
How you can help
· Cutting/colouring practise
· Practise holding a pencil correctly
· Allow you child to be independent when getting dressed
Understanding the World
/ · To join in with family customs and routines.
· To talk about things they have observed for e.g plants and animals.
· To show interest in the lives of others.
· To talk about special times for family and friends.
· To complete a simple program on a computer.
How you can help
· Visit the Natural Science museum and other similar places
· Talk about past and present events
Expressive Arts and Design
/ · Explores the different sounds of instruments.
· To explore what happens when they mix colours.
· To construct with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources.
· To create simple representations of events, people and objects.
· To play alongside other children who are engaged in the same theme.
How you can help
· Sing songs together
· Encourage your child to make up stories in their play
Other Important Information:
Homework: Homework will start after the half-term holiday. This will be given to the children each Friday and needs to be returned by the following Wednesday.
