Explanatory notes

1Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes: Health and Safety at Work Act 2015,Resource Management Act 1993, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, and subsequent amendments.

2Definitions

Organisational procedures – instructions to staff and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These procedures include but are not limited to – site specific procedures, laboratory procedures, manufacturers’ specifications, product quality specifications and reference to legislative or regulatory procedures relevant to the industry.

Wastewater may include stormwater and sewage systems.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of microbiological monitoring for wastewater treatment.

Evidence requirements

1.1Microbiological monitoring is described in terms of purpose and function in wastewater treatment.

1.2Microbes found in wastewater are described in terms of classification and their impact on treatment processes.

1.3Microbiology of wastewater is described in terms of how it affects effluent quality and acceptable parameters within effluent.

1.4Microbiological monitoring processes are described in accordance with organisational procedures.

Outcome 2

Carry out microbiological monitoring for wastewater treatment.

Evidence requirements

2.1Microbiological monitoring is carried out and recorded in accordance with organisational procedures.

2.2Any required process adjustment arising from microbiological monitoring are made in accordance with organisational procedures.
