FY 2018 Annual Program
Title: / Synthesis of Alternate Reinforcements for Enhanced Corrosion Resistance in TxDOT Bridges
The Problem: / TxDOT has bridge structures subject to the corrosive influences of deicing salts in northern areas of the state and marine exposure on the Gulf Coast. A number of alternate reinforcement types have been developed in recent years, and most have either been directly incorporated intothe 2014 TxDOT Specifications Item 440,Reinforcement for Concrete, or added as a special provision to Item 440 (hot-dipped galvanized). Other types and fabrication processes are currently in development and may warrant consideration. In most cases, no definitive selection criteria, performance differences, and economic or constructability considerations have been developed to help designers specify the most appropriate alternate reinforcement for the two exposure environments.
Technical
Objectives: / The work will be a synthesis of national research in the area of alternate reinforcements. The synthesis will target application to the Texas deicing salt and marine environments, and include characterization of that environment. The synthesis will consider all structural components of typical Texas reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete bridges.
Desired
Deliverables: /
  1. Technical memorandum for each task completed.
  2. Monthly progress reports.
  3. Value of Research (VoR) that includes both qualitative and economic benefits.
  4. Research report, including a literature survey, state DOT survey of practice, and recommendations for specific alternate reinforcement selections for the two exposure environments.
  5. Project Summary Report.

Proposal
Requirements: /
  1. Utilize the deliverable based templates (see the appendices provided or in the University Handbook)
  2. Proposals will be considered non-responsive and will not be accepted for technical evaluation if they are not received by the deadline or do not meet the requirements stated in RTI’s University Handbook.
  3. Proposals should be submitted in PDF format, 1 PDF file per proposal. File name should include project name and university abbreviation.
