CRHS Golf Tryouts
Objectives:
1. Keep as many CRHS golfers that the golf courses will allow due to space availability of customers and facilities.
2. Maintain safety and proper supervision.
3. Create a competitive program of players designed to play on the CRHS competition tournament teams at a very high level.
4. Give extra chances for all players to qualify for the teams each semester.
There are approximately 50+ golfers signed up for our two golf classes at the start of school. This is a very high number for a program and exceeds our space availability at the local golf courses. We hope to devise an additional new class for beginners some year. As of now we must create the rosters of this year’s two golf classes based on ability and scores since we are a highly competitive 5-A high school. We wish that we could keep everyone, but we cannot due to the space. We continue to hold tryouts at the end and beginning of each semester for those that improve.
The Junior Varsity/Freshman teams of first period will hold a tryout after school at 3:10 P.M. at River Ridge Golf Course. School bus transportation will NOT be provided. Each foursome will have a scoring monitor with them for a fair score so scores can be compared with validity. Cost is $7 per day paid to the course.
Each tryout participant must have their physical and necessary paperwork turned in for this tryout. This JV/9 class will keep all of the girls since their numbers are much lower and we believe in Title IX. The class size will consist of approximately 24 spots depending on the number of girls. Those exempted from JV tryouts include the following: girls, boys that finished in the top ten of last year’s period one competition ladder, and boys that played well in at least four summer HGA/KAJGTevents. This exempts a few of the incoming freshmen and half of the upperclassmen. These boys are all past the beginner level by proven past performances. Only one top senior will be in this JV class since it is a JV team, and only one player has a chance to make the varsity in December tryouts. All other JV seniors not making first period JV may tryout again in December for the varsity seventh period.
The Varsity team of seventh period will also hold their tryouts at River Ridge.
This team consists currently of 10 boys & 9 girls. The boys that are currently on the 7th period roll sheet were top 5 from last year or they qualified in the spring at the May tryout. Varsity players not playing a summer tournament schedule will have to try out again to evaluate their level/progress compared to current varsity/JV tryout players because their current skill level could now be below the current cut players. We hold a few available varsity spots open at the start of the school year so incoming freshmen, JV players who improved over the summer, or new students can all have an opportunity to make this year’s varsity class. This varsity class is highly competitive as our boys and girls both won district and continue each year to qualify for the state tournament. We usually keep the top freshmen as part of our squad. Different classmen should be able to break the following scores to qualify for varsity: Seniors (85), Juniors (88), Sophomores (91) and Freshmen (94).
Closing thoughts:
Golf is the most wonderful game of all that can be played by those of all sizes and ages.
It is played against yourself and the course. It is played without defense from your fellow competitor. It is totally objective when it comes to the end of the day. The scores at the end of the day count as played by the Rules of Golf. It is played without any prejudices. It teaches inner character, competition, honesty and integrity. It is also played as a team in high school. It is played at a very high level of skill here at Cinco Ranch High School.
I wish everyone the best of luck with their tryouts and their season. I wish we could keep all golfers that are interested in the game, but unfortunately we cannot. I aim to treat all team members fairly throughout the year as I care about everyone of you on and off the course. Once the classes are set, then everyone will begin equally in their class with the opportunity to qualify for each upcoming tournament team.
I look forward with a lot of enthusiasm to this upcoming year. I love this school and all of you Cougars! My expectations for behavior and tournament success are very high as usual. Continue on our great “tradish” of excellence and let’s build a lasting legacy.
“Grind It Out”,
Coach Rick Nordstrom
