“CULTURE 2000”

FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME IN SUPPORT OF CULTURE

Title:

“The Past in the Now – to live in a historical town”

I. Premises of the project.

The topic of the project is the European historical towns.

The project comprises collecting, analysis, exchange and popularization of information on the subject of contemporary functioning (development and protection) of European historical towns.

The exchange and popularization of information as well as experience will be done by means of publication, a series of educational films, a website and publicity campaign.

Each country, participating in the project, will pick the historical towns that are the best utilized and exploited. The criteria for the choice are to be: successful adaptation of the town to contemporary housing, market, trade, tourist, and administrative functions. This means that, the towns will be evaluated in terms of the needs of the contemporary society, but not from the viewpoint of historical values. The protection of historical towns (the conservator issues) will be proved to be an action serving a fulfillment of the needs of contemporary society.

The project is to depict that heritage (historical towns) can be utilitarian and serviceable for modern society, sometimes can be a crucial factor for development.

The important feature of the project is to convert traditional prospect; historical town serve to society, not to some abstractive purpose – the protection of heritage. This concept defines the title of the project: “The Past in the Now – to live in a historical town”.
