THE SUCCESSFUL ATHLETE UNDERSTANDS:

I. Athletes are made during the off-season.

A. The off-season is the time to develop:

1. Stamina

2. Quickness

3. Strength.

B. This is done by taking advantage of the opportunities presented.

1. Regular attendance in the strength room.

2. Participating in individual workouts.

3. Attending Cuba High School activity camps.

4. Attending team camps.

5. Attending open gyms.

6. Attending summer leagues.

II. Self-discipline. To develop self-discipline the athlete needs to:

1. Participate in off-season workouts. There are a million excuses not to work during the off-season, but there is not one good one.

2. Stay involved. If you are not involved in an activity, you should be participating in off-season workouts.

3. Make the most of each and every workout, whether it is during the season or in the off-season. If you do not get better each day, you most certainly will get worse.

4. Be on time!!!

5. Leave all facilities better than the way you found them. Take pride in your school.

6. Do not abuse your mental and physical well-being.

III. Role Models: Student athletes and activity members represent themselves, their parents, the school and the community. Being a member of an athletic/activity program is a privilege not a right.

With visibility comes Responsibility!!!

IV. Following the Rules: Rules are established by the school, MSHSAA, Board Policy and the coach or sponsor of each activity. The established rules will govern the student participants as long as they are enrolled in the Crawford County R-II schools. The rules apply during the summer months as well.

THE WILL TO WIN IS NOTHING WITHOUT THE WILL TO PREPARE!!!

MISSION STATEMENT FOR CRAWFORD COUNTY R-II SCHOOLS

The mission of the Crawford County R-II School District in partnership with the community it serves, is to prepare individuals who are proficient in those basic skills, which are essential to becoming a contributing member of society. This effort will develop responsible individuals who possess personal integrity and excellence, individuals who are able to gather and access data, communicate effectively, and think critically. In a secure and nurturing environment, the district offers a diversity of educational programs that addresses the needs of all students in order to prepare them for an ever-changing world.

The privilege of participating in our athletic/activity program is extended to all male and female students, providing they are willing to assume certain responsibilities. No person shall on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, religion, sex, marital status, age or disability be subjected to discrimination under any educational program.

Being a member of an athletic/activity program is a privilege not a right. It is the choice of the student to be involved and therefore your greatest responsibility is to be a credit to your parents, school and community.

CUBA SCHOOLS ACTIVITY/ATHLETIC PROGRAM

OUR MISSION

We believe that the activity program at Cuba High School complements the academic program. Both involve students in a healthy learning and growth process, which helps them to develop the skills for an ever-changing world. These complementary programs provide experiences through which individuals can mature and learn to make thoughtful choices while considering the rights and feelings of others.

We believe in providing a comprehensive and inclusive activity program, which includes opportunities through which to teach and learn life skills. The Cuba Schools Activity Program encourages participation and cooperation with others, a strong commitment to growth on the part of each participant, and performance that demonstrates good citizenship; all practiced in a spirit of healthy competition.

Guiding Principles

  1. We shall encourage team cooperation as a means to reach our goal of healthy development.

The Cuba schools activity program recognizes that the experience of cooperating as a team for the good of the whole is a key to positive growth. Our coaches and sponsors will teach responsibility, the value of structure, commitment, and sport specific skills. Since the nature of sport is competitive, Cuba schools feel that instilling in athletes the desire to reach and to do their best, as a member of the team is critical. Coaches and sponsors are expected to put the best team forward as they compete against quality opposition, especially at the varsity level.

  1. We shall emphasize to all that commitment and growth begins with practice.

Participation on a team in the Cuba Schools district begins with a strong commitment to practice and improve. Regular attendance and active involvement is an expectation of all athletes at all levels. Players who lack fundamental skill in a given sport are expected to work hard to improve. All participants will be expected to display a strong commitment to practice, good school citizenship, and satisfactory academic progress if they wish to participate in the activity program. Playing time in game situations will vary at all levels based on skill, demonstrated commitment to improvement, and adherence to team rules and school policies.

  1. We shall use all resources available to our programs.

Every effort will be made to support the individual growth through involvement in the activity program at Cuba Schools. The size and scope of our program will be governed by student interest tempered by the practical limitations of funding, facilities, quality coaches/sponsors, time and the accessibility of appropriate opponents.

  1. We shall encourage our entire community to join us in the effort to accomplish our mission.

All members of the Cuba community are encouraged to share in the responsibility for modeling the behaviors that support the healthy growth we seek for our activity members. All should be examples of good sportsmanship.

Participation Guidelines

These guidelines must be followed in a school sponsored activity as well as athletics.

·  Students are free to make their own selections as to sports or activities in which they wish to participate.

·  Participation in more than one sport within a sport season is not allowed.

·  Students are required to use school transportation to and from activities and contests unless they are released to their parent or guardian after the activity or contest. The Coach of the activity can require students to ride the bus back to school.

·  Parents must sign the Cuba release form provided (page 14) if they wish to release their child to another adult. All notes must be verified by the parent (in person or phone) to an Administrator before the end of the school day for the student to be released.

·  Attendance at practice, meetings and meets or games is required. No one is excused without prior permission of the coach or an acceptable emergency.

·  Students must be in attendance the entire day in order to attend extra-curricular activities unless a doctor’s note is provided and the student attends at least (two) 2 full blocks. This rule also applies to the Friday before a Saturday activity.

·  Suspended students are not eligible for participation.

·  Any show of disrespect for Administration, Teachers, Coaches, Sponsors or Officials will never be tolerated.

·  As representatives of the Cuba Schools, appropriate dress will be required of participants of all extracurricular activities.

·  Actions prejudicial to the proper framework of the intent of the activity will be dealt with on an individual basis.

·  Players should adhere to the guidelines set up by the school and by the coach / sponsor.

Tobacco / Drugs / Alcohol

The use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco is not in keeping with our philosophy of putting the interests of the activity first. We strongly feel that drugs including the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, affect the player both mentally and physically in a negative manner. The use of drugs puts individual’s interest ahead of those of the activity and its goals. Violations will be dealt with by following the established guidelines found in board policy, MSHSAA rules and student handbooks as well as this document. These guidelines apply once a student is enrolled in the Cuba School System and during the summer months.

Equipment

In order to give the student a sense of responsibility and an appreciation to their equipment, each student will be held responsible for the abuse or loss of any equipment. This includes uniforms. The student who checked it out must pay for any equipment lost or stolen.

The following guidelines, if followed will reduce the chances for lost or stolen equipment or uniforms.

  1. Do not exchange or loan any equipment checked out to you to another teammate. Only do so after checking with your coach/sponsor.
  2. Keep your locker closed and locked at all times when not in visual contact.
  3. Any loss of equipment should be reported immediately to the coach/sponsor.
  4. Any protective equipment that does not fit properly or has defective parts should be reported immediately to the coach/sponsor.
  5. Any equipment or uniforms you may see out of school, which does not belong to the individual, should be reported to a coach or the school administration.

As part of the lettering policy for all activities at Cuba Schools, all equipment must be turned in clean and cared for or paid for if lost or stolen before any awards can be received.

Team Uniform

All athletes must wear proper equipment for their sport. School issue uniform must be worn at all events, unless a change has been approved by Athletic Director, Principal, or Assistant Principal. All athletes going to and from and during practice must wear appropriate clothing for that sport including a shirt, worn correctly, at all times.

Protect Your Eligibility

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA), of which Cuba Schools is a member, is a voluntary, nonprofit, educational association of junior and senior high schools established for the purpose of working cooperatively in adopting standards for supervising and regulating interscholastic activities and contests.

One of the primary functions of MSHSAA is to establish standards that must be met by all students to attain the privilege of representing their school in interscholastic activities. Cuba Schools follow MSHSAA standards in determining eligibility. Eligibility is a privilege to be granted by the school to a student, which allows that student to participate in interscholastic activities. Eligibility is not a student’s right by law. Precedent setting legal cases has determined that eligibility is a privilege to be granted only if the student meets all standards adopted by the school.

Listed below is some information to acquaint you with the major rules and regulations you must follow in order to protect you eligibility.

  1. Citizenship Requirements

Students who represent a school in interscholastic activities must be a creditable citizen and judged so by the proper school authority certifying a list of students for competition. Those students whose character or conduct is such as to reflect discredit upon themselves or their schools are not considered “creditable citizens.” Conduct shall be satisfactory in accordance with the standards of good discipline. Students may be removed from the activity or suspended if they display poor citizenship. Students who are suspended from school are not allowed to participate until the suspension is over. Students who are expelled from school may not participate for 365 days from the date of the expulsion.

  1. Academic Requirements
  1. Grades 9-12: A student must be currently enrolled in and regularly attending courses that offer 80% of the maximum credits that could be earned. A student must also have earned 80% of the maximum credits (this means you must pass 7 classes) the preceding semester of attendance; or a student must be enrolled in a full course at his or her level in a special education program for the handicapped approved by the Missouri State Department of Education which, though un-graded, enrolls pupils of equivalent age, and that student must have made standard progress for his or her level the preceding semester. A beginning 9th grade student shall have been promoted from the 8th grade to the 9th grade for first semester eligibility.

A student must be making satisfactory progress towards graduation as determined by local school policies.

  1. Grades 7 & 8: A 7th or 8th grade student must be currently enrolled in and regularly attending the normal courses for that grade or must be enrolled in a full course at his or her level in any public school special education program for the handicapped approved by the Missouri State Department of Education, which though ungraded, enrolls pupils of equivalent chronological age.

A student must have been promoted to a higher grade or a higher level in special education at the close of the previous year. However, any such student who failed two or more scheduled subjects, or failed to make standard progress in special education, shall be ineligible the following quarter regardless of promotion to the higher grade.
