TUTOR INFORMATION

Candidates will:

Explain historic development and factors that have influenced Māori performing arts.

Note: The learner may present their explanations orally and/or use a range of techniques e.g. PowerPoint, mind maps, posters, drawings etc. Subsequently evidence may be collected by taking notes of what the learner said or by clearly identifying the learner and recording their responses on tape, DVD, video etc.

Tutor Preparation:

Photocopy the learner activity sheets.

Photocopy the assessment schedule.

Gather resources on the influencing factors and their historic development performing arts for learners.

Entry Information:

Prerequisite: Unit 22756 Perform a Māori performing arts bracket; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge skills.

Demonstration includes an explanation of the influencing factors on Māori performing arts.
Range must include but is not limited to three of the following – political, social, economic, technology, media, people, events, religion, organisations. / The learner explains how THREE of the factors listed below have influenced the development of Māori performing arts:
§  political e.g. government policies, funding initiatives etc
§  social economic e.g. funding for education programmes, centralisation or resources through Runanga etc
§  technology e.g. allows for diversity from traditional instruments, improved access to resources etc
§  media e.g. increases exposure / promotion, dedicated television channel - Māori Television
§  people e.g. role models i.e. tutors, composer etc
§  events e.g. increased exposure through local, iwi festivals and competitions religion e.g. displacement of tikanga and protocols, the influence of hymns introducing singing in parts and harmony
§  organisations e.g. Māori Language Commission promoting language and exposure to kapa, iwi representation / Learner correctly

§  timeline e.g. of key events that developed Māori performing arts
§  compositions e.g. comparing events that have influenced waiata
§  events e.g. progression of the development of a specific key event
§  environmental factors e.g. movement from rural to city and the use of Māori performing as a link to culture/home.
An example of a factor that has influenced the development of Māori performing arts
An example of events influencing Māori performing arts is the introduction of iwi cultural competitions. They are unique in the fact that the performers must sing and, dance, with expression, as well as movement, combined into each item. These competitions are one of the primary reasons for the continuing survival and re-energising of Māori culture. The biennial Matatiri festival is the premier showcase for kapa haka. There are other competitions held for primary and College schools every year etc)

During the war waiata were composed either to celebrate a victory, the return or death of soldiers. In the seventies and eighties waiata were composed around the loss of te reo Māori etc. / Learner correctly
