WinSTAR 10.1 Information and Installation Guide
Chapter 3 : Before anything else … 6
CHAPTER 3 : BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE...
As V10.1has been subject to major changes, we strongly advise against the use of different releases on production sites.
In the testing phase, however, a PC setup with V10.1can connect to a server setup with V9.6 minimum but one must know that the functionality specific to V10.1will not be usable.
It is therefore important to check that you have all the items needed for a correct setup, especially in mixed networks (computers with different OS).
We also remind you that you are the one responsible for the backup of your data.

Chapter 4 : Basic WinSTAR installation 8
CHAPTER 4 : BASIC WinSTAR INSTALLATION
WinSTAR installation can be summarized to the following operations:
1. Control before installing WinSTAR
2. Install WinSTAR
3. Configure XVision and TCP/UNIX (cf. ANNEXES)
4.1 Before installing WinSTAR
You must check that:
1. Your PC is powerful enough and correctly setup with Windows 2000 SP4/XP Pro SP2/2003 Server SP1.
2. The format of the partition that will contain the WinSTAR application and data is NTFS.
3. The TCP/IP protocol must be installed and correctly configured.
For more information on the operation, cf. Annex A.
4. The name of the PC may not contain more than 15 characters, no accented character, points, hyphens,… and may not start with a figure.
5. The names of the Windows users have no blank spaces.
6. The latest version of Service Pack for your operating system is setup.
After having installed Service Pack 2 with Windows XP, cf. annex F.
7. The PATH environment variable (Control Panel/System/Advanced/Environment variables) has been saved.
8. The profile of the Windows user in charge of the installation must have the «Administrator» rights on that PC.
Once this operation done, insert the CD-ROM of the version into the drive. The following dialog automatically appears.
Choose: « Install WinSTAR 10.x» and continue the installation according to the following criteria:
· If it is a first installation as fixed license or a version upgrade on a PC that already has another WinSTAR version, go to section 4.2.
Note:
If it is an update and if the version setup is WinSTAR 9.4 or higher, the license of that PC can be used again. In the other cases, it will be necessary to have a new code.
· If it is the installation of a new server of floating licenses, go to section 4.3.
· If it is the installation of a new client as floating license, go to section 4.4
4.2 Installing fixed license or update WinSTAR version
1. Select “New Fixed standalone license” as shown here after, except if the option “Use existing license information” is selected.
In this case, go to section 3.
2. The “License” dialog appears.
Click “Call STAR” and ask for your license code.
Fill in the form and send it either by fax or Email.
STAR-APIC S.A. will rapidly give you the information to complete this panel.
3. Click on “Next” to skip the two panels.
Note : If it is an update, the programs folder will be the one of the installed version and not the WinSTAR 10.x folder !
You’ll need to manually modify the 9.x to 10.x
4. A panel appears and presents the products.
We recommend you to keep the name proposed for the WinSTAR directory that will appear in your Start menu.
Select the drive/partition where the software is to be installed.
Click on the STAR products you have purchased.
Note : If it is an update, the “Install X Vision 7.3” option will not be marked because updating the product is not necessary !
5. The software is being loaded.
A first end message appears.
When you make a new installation, you must absolutely wait for XVision to be installed. The PC will automatically restart when the operation is done.
After having rebooted the PC, you MUST execute the ANNEXES B to E of this guide.
4.3 Installing WinSTAR floating license server
1. Choose “New Floating license server”.
2. The “License” dialog appears.
Click “Call STAR” and ask for your license code.
Fill in the form and send it either by fax or Email.
STAR-APIC S.A. will rapidly give you the information to complete this panel.
3. The following messages appear because the floating license server isn’t running yet and can not validate your code. Continue setup.
4. Go to section 4.2 (point 3) to continue setup.
4.4 Installing WinSTAR floating license
1. Choose “New floating license client”.
2. Encode the name of the PC server of the WinSTAR 10.1floating licenses.
3. Go to section 4.2 (point 3) to continue setup.

Chapter 5: Starting WinSTAR 13
CHAPTER 5 : STARTING WinSTAR
r Reboot your PC.
r Via WINDOWS’ Start, select the shortcut in WinSTAR 10.0 sub-menu.
r Warning !
- In the Winstar versions older than V9.5, the rgb.txt file containing the color codes of the system used to be in C:\Program Files\Vision\user and unique for every single user of the system.
A major change is to be noticed as from WinSTAR V9.5 which now uses an Xvision server V7.31.
This rgb.txt file is, indeed, now saved in the local profile of the user with, as consequence, the fact that every single person working on the PC will now have his/her own rgb.txt file.
So, the access path to that file is “C:\Documents and Settings\User_name\Application Data\Sco\Vision”.
r For configuring a working session and for creating a symbolic plotter, go to ANNEX G.

Chapter 7 : Uninstalling WinSTAR version 15
CHAPTER 7 : UNINSTALLING WINSTAR VERSION
This operation is to be done only when you want to delete for good a version of a PC already setup with a WinSTAR version.
Indeed, it is useless to delete an older WinSTAR version if you want to upgrade it. In fact, we strongly advise against this operation because it also deletes all the configuration files of the PC. This would oblige you to completely reconfigure the PC after upgrade.
Any WinSTAR 10.x version can be also completely uninstalled by Windows’ «Add/Delete Programs» tool.
In the next panel, the following items are to be deleted absolutely in that order:
· MKS Plateform Components 9.x
· SCO Xvision Eclipse
· WinSTAR 10.x
If local data has been saved on this PC, delete the X:\Winstar directory because the operation here above only deletes the programs and not the related data.

• Launch the «Control Panel» and select the «Add Hardware» icon
• Click «Next» in the first panel and wait for the wizard to end search
• Confirm that hardware is connected and click «Next»
• Choose the option «Add a new hardware device» and click «Next»
• Choose the option «Install the hardware that I manually select from a list» and click «Next»
• Choose the option «Network adapters» and click «Next»
• Choose the option «Microsoft Loopback Adapter» and click «Next»
• Click «Next»

2. Check that the TCP/IP protocol is properly configured
• Launch «Control Panel» and select «Network Connections»
• Select the network connection to be configured
• In «General» tab click «Properties»
• Select « Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)» and click «Properties»
• Check that TCP/IP customization is logical
If you have installed a loopback adapter or if you are not part of a network, simply use the address IP 1.1.1.1 and the Subnet mask 255.0.0.0.
For the networked configuration of your PC, contact your IT administrator if you don’t have enough information.
Click «OK».
• To check that the TCP/IP protocol is active and operational, open a command prompt (Start / Programs / Accessories / Command prompt) and encode the command «ping name_of_your__pc» as shown here under.
