& PHYSIOLOGY II

Theory Hours: 3Lab Hours:3 Credits: 4 Prerequisites: BIOL 110

Department:SCIENCEDate:SEP 07 Program:LIBERAL ARTS

Prepared By: Barry Spracklin

Catalog Description: A CONTINUATION OF HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY II. THIS COURSE INCLUDES CURRENT, IN-DEPTH INFORMATION ON THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE ENDOCRINE, DIGESTIVE, RESPIRATORY, BLOOD, CARDIOVASCULAR, LYMPHATIC, URINARY, AND REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS. LABORATORY WORK AUGMENTS LECTURE TOPICS AND INCLUDES EXERCISES IN MICROSCOPY, THE STUDY OF FRESH AND PRESERVED SPECIMENS, AND PHYSIOLOGICAL MEASURMENTS ON THE HUMAN BODY. Prerequisite: BIOL 110.

Course Objectives: AFTER COMPLETING THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO LIST, IDENTIFY, AND EXPLAIN:

  1. THE ORGAN SYSTEMS OF THE BODY AND THEIR MAJOR PARTS AND PRODUCTS.
  2. THE SPECIALIZED CELLS, TISSUES, AND CHEMICALS OF EACH ORGAN SYSTEM.
  3. THE BASIC PHYSIOLOGY OF EACH ORGAN SYSTEM.
  4. THE MAJOR WAYS THE ORGAN SYSTEMS INTERACT TO MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS.
  5. BE ABLE TO USE THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY GENETIC, DEVELOPMENTAL, COMMUNICABLE, AND NUTRITIONAL DISEASES AND HORMONAL IMBALANCES.

Required Text: HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY, 7TH EDITION, MARIEB, E.N., K. HOEN, BENJAMIN CUMMINGS, 2007.

HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY MANUAL CAT VERSION, 9TH ED,MARIEB,E.N., BENJAMIN CUMMINGS, 2007.

CORE ATTRIBUTES: WITH EACH ORGAN SYSTEM STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS DURING LABS AND EXAMS, NOT JUST MEMORIZATION, AND THE STUDY SKILLS TO LEARN THE MATERIAL IN THE ALLOTTED TIME. IN THE LABORATORY THEY WILL DEVELOP THEIR TECHNICAL SKILLS AS THEY USE MODELS, CHARTS, MICROSCOPES AND SLIDES, BONES, PRESERVED ORGANS, AND DISSECT THE CAT AS THEY REINFORCE THEIR THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE.

Other Related Issues: THE EXACT SCHEDULING OF LECTURES, LABS, AND EXAMS DURING A SEMESTER WILL VARY CONSIDERABLY DEPENDING ON THE LENGTH OF THE COURSE (6, 12, 16 WEEKS, ETC.), THE TOTAL NUMBER OF LAB SECTIONS, THE AVAILABILITY OF THE LAB, AND HOLIDAYS. WHEN THERE ARE MULTIPLE LAB SECTIONS, THE LECTURE AND LAB EXAMS ARE SEPARATE. WHEN THERE IS ONLY ONE SECTION AND LECTURE AND LAB ARE COMBINED DURING 4-5 HOUR BLOCKS, THE EXAMS MAY BE A COMBINATION OF LECTURE AND LAB.
