Manual Handling Advice
- Plan the route, ensure that floors and steps are clear and slip free.
- Plan the lift, consider rest stops to change grip.
- Reduce carrying time by controlled pushing or pulling.
- Use effective PPE i.e. footwear, gloves.
- Make the load lighter, break it down into components.
- Restrict the movement of the load.
- If using a team lift, consider using chains and ensure one team member controls the lift.
- Bend knees, keep chin in, and keep back straight and elbows by side.
- Get a good grip on the load.
- Keep the feet balanced, with the leading leg forward.
- Now lift, do not jerk.
- Keep the load close to the body.
- Put the load down before adjusting grip or stance.
- Allow muscles to rest before continuing.
- If necessary, seek health advice for individual concerns.
