42 REARING CALVES

Average - £227.00

Much more quality in the ring today and another tremendous trade for all on offer. The best calves are a lot of money generally but the upward rise in the medium and lower quality calves makes them look stronger money relatively.

Dairy Breeds (9): Very low entry but trade exceptional. Top £160 for J D Wright & So, 2 from J G & S J Tinley sold well at £118. Best sorts £90+, plainer caves of 3rd quality status traded £40-£50 overall average £84.

Native Breeds (7): Best Hereford bulls to £285 for G M Jones, £235 for J W H Ball, Angus to £23 for L J Scott & Son, Hereford heifers still strong money £190 and £175 for A W Jones.

Continentals (27): Still very well sold and demand outstripping supply, many more calves could have been sold well today.

Bulls saw Charolais to £275 for /s C & R O’Predy, Simmental £250, £288 and £290 for Lodge Farms. Limousin reached £330 for C G Davies, £328 for M/s R A Williams, Tytherington, Blue bulls still topping the trade with L J Scott’s March born Blues at £405, £395, £388 and £335 with the medium bulls trading £240-£260. Heifers also in demand both for fattening and future herd replacements. Simmental to £280 from Lodge Farms, Limousin £260 for L Lewis, Blonde to £238 (JW H Ball), L J Scotts March Blue heifers made to £300 and £260,two crackers from R A Williams, Tytherington £295 and£290.

A Friesian cow (05) sold to £1100 from Mr S Cottrell. An incalf Hereford cow (02) sold to £790 from M/s Hazell & Jefferies, Panbourne.

383 STORE CATTLE

Averages: Steers £613, Heifers £514

A pleasing entry for the last week of May with the trade stronger on all cattle despite the gloom & doom of the low beef trade and shortage of grass.

The Continental x steers (24 – 30mnths) sold to a good trade with the stronger meated sorts £780 - £870 topping at £952 (132p/kg) & £928 (133p/kg) for Simmental’s from M/s R & B Brickell, Perrotts Brook. Limousin steers sold to £930 (133p/kg) from M/s M & D Lewis, Water Eaton. Overage Charolais steers sold to £780 (130p/kg) from Mr G Beale, Leighterton.

The strong Continental heifers (24 – 30mnths) were in short supply and sold to a good trade with the better sorts £700 - £780 topping at £795 (126p/kg) for a Charolais from Mr G Beale, Leighterton.

The farming cattle (18 – 24mnths) saw another wonderful show of cattle forward. Trade was improved on last week with the stronger better shaped sorts traded between £750 - £850 (130 – 145p/kg) topping at £918 (141p/kg) for Simmental x steers from M/s Watkins Partners, Rockhampton. The general run of Continental steers traded between £700 - £750 (120 – 135p/kg). The native breeds saw Hereford steers to £708 (130p/kg) from Mr W Moon, Dursley with Friesian steers to £635 (120p/kg) from M/s R Witchell & Son, Tetbury.

The heifers (18 – 24mnths) were also a firm trade with the few stronger, better shaped sorts over £700 topping at £800 (155p/kg) for a Charolais from M/s Millard Bros, Coopers Hill. The general run of Continental heifers traded between £570 - £650 (125 – 140p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus heifers to £658 (134p/kg) from M/s C Wells & Sons, Purton.

The younger steers (15 – 18mnths) sold to a good trade with the best Continental steers selling between £650 - £700 (130 – 155p/kg) topping at £715 (181p/kg) & £708 (140p/kg) for British Blue steers from M/s Millard Bros, Coopers Hill who consigned 101 grand Continental cattle. The general run of Continental steers traded between £580 - £630 (125 – 145p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £700 (125p/kg) from M/s R & J Portch, Brinkworth.

The younger heifers (15 – 18mnths) saw the better shaped sorts trading between £580 - £650 generally topping at £760 (138p/kg) from M/s Millard Bros. The general run of heifers traded between £500 - £550 (120 – 135pkg)

The weaned calves & young stores sold to a strong trade with the better shaped steers trading generally between £550 - £580 generally topping £725 (169p/kg) for Simmental steer (13mnths) from M/s F & M Candy, Corsham.

Blonde heifers (14mnths) sold to £622 (157p/kg) from Mr C Thomas, Duntisbourne Leer.

Again an improved entry with a slip in trade all week but again our trade well ahead of most other centres. The best handyweight lambs traded between 205 – 215p/kg topping at 225p/kg £100 for 44.5kg from Mr P Baker. The general run of lambs sold between 195 – 205p/kg. The heavier sorts traded generally between £88 - £90.

Less forward of mixed quality sold to a mixed trade with the better sort well sold trading between 175 – 190p/kg topping at 198p/kg £80 for 40½kg from M/s F & R Wilcox. The general run either leaner or heavier sorts traded between 150 – 165p/kg. Sheep with 2 teeth saw more forward topping at £75.

Another improved entry sold to a good trade but with the edge just off the trade from the previous weeks. The best Suffolk & Continental ewes were in short supply trading between £85 - £95 topping at £101. Best Mules traded between £70 - £82. The half meated ewes also met a good trade selling generally between £60 - £75 with the plainer & smaller sorts £45 - £55 generally. Slaughter rams sold to £70.

Bulls 130p/kg Steers 139p/kg Heifers 132p/kg

A better than expected trade assisted by so few on offer and plenty of demand.

Limousin steers to 140p (745 kg) from M J C Hocken whose best heifers (650-660kg) made 138p p kg.

Simmental steers from Mrs S McMurray reached 138p (650kg) and a run of tidy bulls from Bruce Willis saw Charolais (525 kg) at 148p and his Blondes to 130p.

11 OTM CATTLE & BARREN COWS

A very small entry that sold to another very good trade with demand very strong indeed but cattle short everywhere at this time of year.

Cows sold to a top of 104p for Friesian from M R Vines & Son reaching £854 with all the best types 95p+, mediums cows late 80’s to 90p with a few plainer types on offer selling very well for type at 55-60p.

Overage steers sold to 134p for H C Jones & Son and an overage Blue from Richard Jones & Family, Down Hatherley making 131p £875.
