JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:Cook

REPORTS TO:Business Manager

SALARY RANGE:H3

HOURS:20 hours per week (TT+2)

DATE:October 2016

PURPOSE OF JOB:

The aim of this post is to sustain and improve the quality of education offered withinthe provision. The Cook works to support the ethos and maintain the efficient and economic production of quality food.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To prepare lunch for midday for the whole provision ensuring the healthy eating agenda and food standards are maintained.
  • Provide for special dietary requirements where necessary and seek regular termly updates from the office.
  • To manage all aspects of the catering provision including ordering of food and supplies including stock control to ensure minimum wastage.
  • Produce accurate information to the Finance department of sales.
  • Line Management of MSA including induction and support.
  • Liaise with the Business Manager when planning/costing menus in order to provide a balanced nutritious diet, making the best use of available fresh foods.
  • Ensure clear menus are displayed in the reception area and in the main dining hall.
  • Ensure the compliance of all kitchen equipment.
  • Manage the budget allocation by costing the provisions made throughout the year ensuring cost effectiveness.
  • Clear, wash and tidy the areas used and ensure the kitchen retains a high level of cleanliness.
  • Report all defects, Health & Safety and Premises issues to the school office.
  • Maintain the smooth running of the kitchen at all times.
  • Maintain records for Environmental Health and Kitchen inspection. (Food Hygiene Standards)
  • Access training to ensure current statuary certification is in place.
  • Prepare or support in the preparation of staff and student buffets, as required for events/insets.
  • Maintain accurate records of food supplies and freezer/fridge temperatures.
  • Ensure stock rotation – request stocks and check deliveries; check and value stock as required

Training and Development

  • Supervise and instruct kitchen staff members in the use of all equipment and hygiene procedures, giving help and guidance where appropriate.
  • Conduct basic food hygiene training for all staff involved in handling and delivery of food.
  • Maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence.
  • Attend mandatory training days/courses, on or off site, as and when required.

Health and safety

  • Ensure statutory Health and Safety standards in the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Ensure all crockery and equipment is cleaned and stored appropriate, and that the overall cleaning of the kitchen area (and, where appropriate, the dining areas) is carried out effectively.
  • Report immediately to Business Manager, any illness of an infectious nature or accident incurred by a young person, colleague, self or another.
  • Understand, and ensure the implementation of the Health and Safety Policy, and Emergency and

Fire Procedures.

  • Report to the Business Manager any faulty appliances, damaged furniture, equipment or any potential hazard.
  • Promote safe working practice in Catering Department.

General

  • Maintain a positive personal/professional profile within the local community, ensuring the good reputation of the school at all times.
  • Ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.
  • Notify the school or the Business Manager as soon as possible of your inability to reportfor duty, and also on your return to work from all periods of absence.
  • Ensure the security of the school is maintained at all times.
  • Adhere to all school policies and procedures within the defined timescales.
  • Ensure all equipment is clean and well maintained.
  • Carry out any other tasks that may be reasonably assigned to you.

CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU

The post is classed as having a high degree of contact with children or vulnerable adults and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offences Act 1974. The provision is highly committed to safeguarding children. An enhanced disclosure will be sought through the Criminal Records Bureau as part of Hertfordshire County Council’s pre-employment checks. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The post holder is required to contribute to and support the overall aims and ethos of the provision. All staff are required to participate in training and other learning activities and in performance management and development as required by the provisions policies and practices.
