Notes: Comprehensive notes are to be taken in class and kept in your interactive notebook. You will be taught how to take Cornell style notes. The majority of test and quiz materials will come from notes, textbook readings, homework and lab work. Good notes are essential for success in this class. Each night, the notes can be reviewed, rewritten, or supplemented by reading the textbook. The notes, labs, and chapter vocabulary for each unit should be used to prepare for tests and quizzes. The 3 ring binder/folder should be used to store labs, graded tests, and quizzes.

interactive notebook:You will be required to have a COLLEGE-ruled spiral notebook with at least 150 pages (I recommend a notebook with more than 150 pages) with a strong cover. This notebook should only be used for this class. Homework, classwork, and notes will go in this notebook. I will collect the notebook on the day of the test for each unit. Detailed information is found later in this syllabus.

Late Work:Late work will NOT be accepted. On long term projects, it is the teacher’s discretion to accept late projects with a penalty.

COMMUNICATION:

I primarily communicate through email, so it is important for parents to provide an email address. My email address is . The form which requires a parent signature has a place for a parent’s email to be provided.

BLOG: I utilize my teacher blog a resource updated on a regular basis. I try to update daily and include all electronic copies of materials or notes we use in class. However, printing notes off the blog does not replace taking class notes. The blog can be accessed at http://cobblearning.net/aadams

SYNERGY:

Synergy is the online grade book used by each teacher. Every parent can access their student’s grades at any time, for any class. If you do not have access to Synergy, please contact the counseling office for access.

Tardies:

The school wide tardy policy is followed (please refer to the student handbook). By the last bell, you should be seated and ready for class. You will be tardy if you arrive after the late bell.

Makeup Work:

·  For any excused absence, a student has 5 days to make up the work.

·  You have 2 days to make any absence excused. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET ALL MAKEUP WORK.

·  All makeup work is expected to be completed outside of class.

·  If you are absent on the day of a lab, you will be expected to make it up before or after school if the absence is excused.

·  Any copying of labs, homework, or classwork (including left side interactive notebook assignments) will result in zeroes for all parties involved.

·  If you are absent on the day of the test, you will have to make it up before or after school within 5 days. You must schedule a day with me when you return. IF YOU ARE ABSENT THE DAY BEFORE A TEST, THIS DOES NOT EXCUSE YOU FROM THE TEST.

·  It is highly recommended to copy another student’s notes from the right side of the notebook if you have been absent. An absence is not an excuse for not being familiar with material.

ROOT WORDS AND CHAPTER VOCABULARY:

During each chapter, root words/prefixes and vocabulary will be included in notes that need to be learned. These root words and vocabulary words will be used during class and will be on the unit test/quizzes. Any chapter vocabulary and root words used in class during notes, or assigned in the interactive notebook, can be on the test/quizzes.

Extra Help: I am available most mornings and all afternoons by appointment for extra help, clarification, and review for tests or quizzes. Please discuss your availability with me, if you would like assistance or need to make up work. I want you to do well.

CLASS RULES:

·  Be on time to class.

·  NO cell phones/iPods during class time.

·  Bring ALL materials each day.

·  Sit in assigned seat (if applicable).

·  Talk only when allowed to do so.

·  Do NOT eat or drink in class (exceptions: water in bottles and rewards from your instructor).

·  Turn in work on time.

·  Do NOT talk during quizzes or tests. Any noise will result in an automatic zero.

·  Treat everyone with respect and courtesy. Any behavior that interferes with the right of other students to learn will NOT be tolerated.

·  Follow all lab rules. Any misbehavior will result in privileges being taken away for the remainder of the semester. Alternate writing assignments will be given.

·  Return ALL progress reports with parent signatures.

Labs:

Objective: The laboratory is the place where you will get firsthand knowledge of concepts introduced in class, analyze data, and draw conclusions to further your knowledge of the concept. Dissections will also be incorporated to further your understanding of anatomy.

Behavior in Lab: The laboratory is a place for serious thought and investigation. It is not the place for socializing. The following rules must be followed:

LAB RULES:

·  Go to workstation promptly (leave cell phones and iPods behind).

·  Assign a person to each task: materials, directing lab, cleanup, follow up questions, etc.

·  Do not damage school property, interfere with others, or harm others.

·  Never play with the shower or eyewash station. These should only be used in emergency situations. Disciplinary action will be taken for those that break this rule.

·  No horseplay.

·  Remain at your workstation and do not disturb others. Ask Mrs. Adams for assistance.

·  Never try things that are not outlined by your lab instructions. Do not tamper with unrelated materials, chemicals, or equipment.

·  Protective eyewear and clothing will be worn when needed.

·  Nothing should be removed from the lab.

Preparing for the Lab

1.  Read entire lab sheet before any materials are collected.

2.  Review and use your notes and accompanying text sections that deal with the concepts under investigation.

Drawings required in lab should be drawn while actively observing the object (microscope slide, dissection, etc.). Any attempt to copy drawings will result in a zero on the lab.

Labs should be completed when assigned during class or that evening as homework, unless otherwise specified. Labs for each unit will be collected after a lab is completed (same day or next day). Concepts introduced or reinforced during lab should be studied, and questions will be on the unit test/quizzes.

Projects:

Two of the projects for this class will be an infectious disease project and a skeleton project. Both will count as a test grade. Other long term assignments will be included throughout the semester and are usually worth quiz grades.
