Application is invited from candidates for masters or doctoral degrees in law by thesis at UCT.

This funding is a form of bridging finance to give students contemplating higher degrees the security of knowing that their financial needs will be met for the first year of their studies. Successful candidates must also make application to the University Scholarships Committee and other appropriate sources for scholarship funding. Any award from external sources that takes financial support beyond the level of R220,000 per annum for doctoral students or R170,000 per annum for masters students will then be deducted from the scholarship granted by the Faculty.

Value: approximately R40,000

The successful incumbent will be required to:

Register for full-time or part-time study in the Faculty of Law for either:

(i)  an LLM or MPhil degree by coursework and minor dissertation;

(ii)  an LLM or MPhil degree by dissertation only; or

(iii)  a PhD degree.

Comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practices for the postgraduate sector.

No service will be required in return for the award

BHEKI MLANGENI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - 2013

Cheadle Thompson & Haysom Inc endows an annual scholarship of R25 000 in memory of BhekiMlangeni – assassinated in 1991 whilst serving his articles at the firm - for his courage and commitment as a community leader, student and lawyer.

The Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student at the University of Cape Town (UCT) who is Black and financially disadvantaged and who is either enrolled in:-

·  final-year LLB degree and demonstrated excellence in constitutional law, labour law, constitutional litigation, current issues in constitutional law or international human rights law and the constitution; or

·  final-year Masters degree in Social Justice;

and has a commitment to use his or her legal qualification to advance the cause of social justice.

The recipient may be required to participate in a vacation assignment at Cheadle Thompson & Haysom Inc.
