6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK:

6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Ayurveda is an ancient science in the world, which has been trying to solve [subside] the trividadukha such as Adhyatmika, Adi-daivika and Adi-bhoutika . Among the works of various ancient and recent research scholars, this work is like a drop from the ocean. Among the various works in Ayurveda, the concept of Agni has been explained.

In bharatiya shastra, since ancient time, Agni has been considered not only as Ishwara and prana and related to shareera but also related to the external world as vyapta in all panchamahabhutas.

In Ayurveda vangamaya, it has been explained that Agni is present in every paramanu and every kosha, as every process takes place with the help of Agni. There will be a continuous destruction and production takes place in every kosha [cell] and this process is due to Agni only, The process of panchabhautika ahara and production of Dosha, Dushya and their bhavas will be taking place by Agni only.

The ancient acharyas identified the importance of Agni and gave important place in their respective granthas just like Acharya sushruta, while explaining paribhasa of swasta as

“samadosha samaagnishacha samadhatu mala kriya

prasannatmendriyartha manaha swastha etyabidiyate ”

The one which is having urdwagati and predominance of teja mahabhuta is called as Agni. According to fundamental principal of Ayurveda, Agni has an important role to play in the physiological functioning of body, Jatharagni has been considered to be prime among all agnis, The functioning of other agnis, Dhatwagni and Bhutagni are dependent upon the strength of jatharagni.

There are 13 types of agni i.e Jatharagni-1, Bhutagni-5, Dhatwagni-7

When the substances enter in the body, they have to face several chemical changes in the presence of Jatharagni, Bhutagni and Dhatwagni. So that they will change into suitable form for absorption. This process is known as Ahara Paripaka.

Jatharagni paka, is that the life span , complexion , vitiality , good health, enthusiasum, plumpness, vital essence luster are derived from the thermogenetic process in the body i.e jatharagni.

Ancient acharyas have emphasized the role of jathargni to be more important than any of the other types of Agni, It’s functions are pachana [digestion] of ingested food and poshana [nourishment] for all types of Agni.

All the diseases are said to be due to mandagni. Agni is the one which, when in normalcy can cause nourishment of shareera in total and the same agni when becomes abnormal causes destruction of shareera. Hence as agni has its atmost importance for life existence, hence this study “A study on Agni w.s.r. to jatharagni” will be undertaken.

6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

1. Acharya charaka in chikitsa sthana mentioned 13 types of Agni1,2.

2. Acharya vagbhata in sutra sthana mentioned about properties of agni3.

3. Acharya describes the importance of jatharagni as it is the one which

4. Acharya mentioned about the bhutagni as it is the one which helps in

breaking down of ahara as per it’s bhoutic quality5.

5. Acharya mentioned that dhatwagni paka, is essential for conversion of

sara amsa of ahara rasa in to their respective dhatu6.
