Tomorrow is the deadline for convention actions

Those who want to run for office at this October’s Diocesan Convention, or submit a proposed debatable resolution or amendment to the constitution or canons, must submit materials by tomorrow, Aug. 7.

Elections will fill slots on the Council of Trustees and the Disciplinary Board.

The Council of Trustees is the governing body of the diocese between conventions. Seats on this body to be filled at this convention are:

·  At-large lay representative (three-year term). This is an open seat; the incumbent, Bob Skaggs, has served the maximum of two terms.

·  At-large clergy representative (three-year-term). The incumbent, the Rev. Patrick Funston, is eligible for re-election.

The Disciplinary Board hears some complaints about clergy misconduct and makes recommendations to the bishop about possible action. It consists of four clergy and three lay members who serve for three-year terms.

All nominations must be made on the nomination form, available on the Diocesan Convention webpage, http://www.episcopal-ks.org/life/convention.php. The form must be accompanied by a head-and-shoulder photograph of the nominee, at least 300 dots-per-inch and 2-by-2 inches in size.

Sign up by tomorrow for a conference to explore vocational calls

Do you think you might have a call to a specialized lay ministry, such as lay preacher, catechist, worship leader, youth minister or director of children’s education? Or is your call to ordained ministry?

Do you know someone in your parish who has developed or shows potential for these special skills?

The Episcopal Diocese of Kansas invites interested persons to “Explore Your Call” during a weekend conference Aug. 14-15 at Grace Cathedral, 701 SW 8th Ave. in Topeka. The conference begins on Friday at 6 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

You will learn more about discerning and recognizing your lay or ordained call, the ordination process and its required prerequisites, and classes offered at the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry.

There also will be discussions geared toward full-time and bi-vocational ministry, and on what to expect as a clergy spouse.

Prayers asked for campus ministry retreat this weekend

Please keep in your prayers those who are participating in the retreat for leaders of the diocese’s campus ministry program Friday through Sunday at St. Peter’s, Pittsburg.

They include Campus Missioner the Rev. Stephanie Jenkins; Interns Ashley Petty (K-State) and Ryan Zavacky (KU); Intern Assistant Tyler Kerr (KU); and Peer Minsters Carin Gavin, Alex Kezar, Emma Miller, Dalton Nelson, John Olson, Janelle Sparkman, Austin Stapleton, Cara Wedeking and Abby Zimmerman.

Each full weekend in August, peer ministers gather to receive training and buildcommunity in preparation for the coming year’s ministry to their fellow students at their respective college campuses.

Kansas young adults seek financial support for their year of service

Naomi Cunningham and Tristan Holmberg, young adults from the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, are among 27 people selected for the Episcopal Church’s Young Adult Service Corps, during which they will devote a year of service to an Anglican Communion diocese.

But they are required to raise $10,000 of the $24,000 it takes to support them during this year – and you can help.

They hope to have funds in hand before they leave at the end of August.

Naomi will serve in France, and Tristan in the Philippines.

September classes set at Bishop Kemper School for Ministry

On Sept. 12-13, the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry (BKSM) is offering three classes in Topeka:

Grace Cathedral hosts concert featuring music in honor of Mary

Grace Cathedral’s “Great Spaces” music and arts series will host the Spire Chamber Ensemble in performance of devotional pieces in honor of the Virgin Mary on Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. at the church, 701 SW 8th Ave. in Topeka.

The concert will be performed by candlelight with unique staging.

Tickets are $25 for adult general admission and $5 for students with ID. Group discounts also are available.

Safeguarding God’s Children training offered Aug. 29 in Overland Park

St. Thomas’, Overland Park, is hosting a Safeguarding God’s Children training the morning of Saturday, Aug. 29, beginning at 9 a.m., at the church, 12251 Antioch Road.

This training is required for all clergy, church employees and those who regularly minister with children and youth.

Celebration of New Ministry for the Rev. Laurie Lewis is Sept. 2

A Celebration of New Ministry for the Rev. Laurie Lewis, who has been called to be rector of Trinity, Arkansas City and of Grace, Winfield, will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Trinity, 224 North A Street in Arkansas City. A reception will follow the service.

Bishop Dean Wolfe will be the celebrant, and the preacher will be the Rev. Lauren Stanley, priest in charge on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota.

All members of the diocese are invited to attend. Clergy are invited to vest (alb and white stole) and process.

Fall Fun Fest for all youth is Sept. 12-13

Youth are encouraged to invite a friend to this awesome event. We’ll have sumo suits, Zorb Balls and the Radical Run obstacle course. We’ll also make new friends, hear some youth share thoughts on faith, watch a movie, and eat YUMMY food. Try out diocesan youth events and kick-off the school year with this great over-nighter.

Researcher seeks input about church kitchens

Dr. Ken Jobst, a professor of church growth at Simmons College in Kentucky, is conducting research on how to maximize the potential of church kitchens, which he calls one of the most underutilized resources churches have.

Indiana diocese seeks names for its next bishop

The Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana is starting the process of electing a successor to Bishop Edward Little, who is retiring on June 30, 2016, and they are seeking names of potential nominees for the position.
