Sixth Form cultural trip to KYUEM College Malaysia

November/December 2016

Students who will be attending the sixth form of any of the West Wilts schools in Year 12 during the academic year 2016-17 are invited to apply to attend a one week trip to KYUEM Sixth Form College in Malaysia from Friday 25 November till Saturday 2nd December 2016.

Koleg Yayasan UEM is a residential college for Malaysian students studying British ‘A’ levels with the intention of attending university in the UK, Australia or the US. Most go to the UK. The college attracts some of the best young people in Malaysia, all of whom speak English and are very keen to participate in this visit by Wiltshire students.

The West Wilts students will spend the week with an equal number of KYUEM students, also in Year 12, working with them in developing responsibility and personal skills, experiencing college life, getting to know each other and more about the culture of Malaysia. We will also visit cities and sights around this part of Malaysia. (The college is approximately 70km north of Kuala Lumpur.) However, this is a leadership and cultural trip, not a holiday.

The trip has run for over 6 years, and each cohort of students have said how influential they have found it in their personal development. Getting to know students studying the same courses as them but from a very different background has opened their eyes and enabled them to develop a far greater understanding of different religions (with a mixture of mostly Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu students) and cultures and enabled them to reflect on their own values.

The cost will be in the region of £1600 - £1700 which covers all travel, flights, insurance, accommodation, food and excursions.

It is important that the West Wilts students attending the trip are open minded, willing to work with others, to respect other cultures and have a desire to learn more about others and themselves. We will be holding an evening meeting on Thursday April 21st 2016 for those students interested, with their parents, to explain more details about the trip. It will be held at The Sixth Form Centre at St Augustine’s Catholic College in Trowbridge at 6.30pm for about an hour.

Details of how to apply for the trip will also be explained at this meeting.

The trip is limited to 16 students, and places will be allocated on a first come/first served basis. However we reserve the right to refuse a place to a student in the unlikely event that their school believes their behaviour would not be appropriate for such a trip.

There will be a series of further meetings for the students from the different West Wilts sixth forms to get to know each other and prepare for the Malaysia visit. We will also keep parents informed of the itinerary and to collect important information.
