Curriculum Area: Science

Science is a core subject and one that thrives at Trinity Academy. Subjects studied within this curriculum area include Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The academy is able to offer Science teachers some of the best teaching facilities in Yorkshire.

We have dedicated Science labs and a 3D cinema that enables teachers to demonstrate areas such as the human heart in 3D. The centre piece of the department is the Faraday space; an open plan teaching area, designed for practical demonstrations and equipped with air server facilities.

As one of the academy’s specialisms, Science plays a key role in developing and promoting the ethos of the academy and providing a beacon of good practice. We are also able to offer enhanced curriculum opportunities through our strong partnership links with our sponsors, in particular Huddersfield University.

All students follow the Science Discovery Pathway which meets National Curriculum requirements in Phase 1. More variety is available in Phase 2, with courses inCombined andTriple Science GCSE to meet the interests, aptitudes and career needs of individual students. From September 2016, new specifications are being taught. In 6th Form, students are given the option of studying a range of Science courses at A-level.

Summer 2017 examination outcomes gave our best results to date for ; Triple Science students achieved 47% A*- Afor the Further Additionalcourseand inAdditionalScience 73% of students achieved A*-C. The Science team is a vibrant team of professionals, many of which are at the start of their teaching career. We welcome new members of the team who are not afraid to introduce new teaching and learning methods, or try new ideas that change and challenge how students learn.

Currently there are 21 teachers within the department. The department is led by the Curriculum Leader, with additional leadership support from two Deputy Curriculum Leaders, a Lead Teacher and four Associate Lead Teachers.

With the support and direction of a strong leadership team, the Science department is able to support new teachers, and provide opportunities for more experienced practitioners to develop their skills and career.
