FAQs for Graduate Nurse Residency

  1. Can I apply to the Nurse Residency Program if I haven’t quite graduated from nursing school?
  • You may apply and interview before you have graduated nursing school, however, you must pass your nursing boards and have your Wyoming license by the time you start as a new employee.
  1. Are there any particular shifts the Graduate Nurse Residents are assigned to?
  • This is dependent on the unit’s staffing needs and currently there are some night and some day shift Graduate Nurse Residents.
  1. How many hours a week will I work?
  • Full-Time 36 hours a week plus Nurse Residency class time (about 48 hours over 1 year)
  • Dependent upon unit based requirements you may have additional paid mandatory classes as well
  • After you are off unit orientation you may be given the option to work extra shifts
  1. How many Graduate Nurse Residents are typically hired?
  • This depends on the number of open positions.
  • In the past 5-16 have been hired during each hiring cycle.
  1. Is the Graduate Nurse Residency a paid program?
  • Yes, you will be paid an hourly wage both for attending Nurse Residency classes and for your unit based training on the floor.
  • If ACLS, PALS, or any other certification is required for your unit you will attend these classes at no charge
  1. How long is the application open? How long after applying will I know if I have an interview?
  • The application is typically open for 4 to 6 weeks (Dates will be posted on the CRMC Webpage under the Nurse Residency Tab)
  • Should you be selected to interview you will be contacted via phone for an interview approximately a week after the application has closed. If you are not selected for an interview you will be notified by email.
  1. What will my starting wage be?

  1. What departments can Graduate Nurse Residents work in?
  • Acceptance into specialty units depends heavily on open positions on those units
  • In your cover letter please specify your top 3 choices in order, as well as an alternate unit that you would not mind working in
  1. Is there a contract for the Nurse Residency Program?
  2. Yes there is a two year contract for the program, however, you may apply for a transfer to a different department after one year of employment.

Acute Care Units

  • Ortho-Neuro- Typical patient diagnosis/treatment may include : Joint replacement/spinal surgical patients, Epilepsy, CVA/TIA, and medical overflow
  • Surgical- Typical patient diagnosis/treatment may include: Abdominal surgery, bariatric surgery, other general surgical procedures, and medical overflow
  • Oncology- Typical patient diagnosis/treatment may include: Chemo therapy, patients with a history of cancer, and medical overflow
  • Medical- Typical patient diagnosis may include: COPD, Diabetic Patients with complications, CHF, GI bleed, renal failure etc.

Critical Care Areas

  • Telemetry- Typical patient diagnosis may include: Pre and Post op Open Heart patients, CHF, Heart monitoring, treatment of irregular heart rhythms, Pre and Post cardiac cath lab patients
  • ED- Treats all age categories and conditions
  • ICU- Treats all critically ill adult patients (and occasionally teenaged patients)

Rehabilitation Units

  • Acute Rehab Unit- Typical patient seen: Medically stable patients who may be recovering from surgery or working on gaining mobility and independence
  • Transitional Care Unit (TCU)-Patients are typically preparing to go home, assisted living etc. Patients in this unit may have been originally admitted to the hospital with a total hip or knee, COPD, CHF, or needed a CABG during hospitalization.

Women and Children’s Services (Pediatrics, OB, Mother- Baby, Nursery)

Behavioral Health- Typical patient diagnosis may include: Schizophrenia, bipolar, manic depressive, suicidal ideations, behavioral problems etc.
