Projects on Campus
Main Building, Comms Room Works – Standby Generator
The comms rooms within Main Building are being connected to a standby generator to support the IT system in the event of a power failure. The works will involve installing new large cabling between all floors of the building. Unfortunately there will be restricted access within the stairwell lobbies from Monday, 26th January 2015 until Friday, 30th January 2015. Areas of work will be cordoned off and access through the stairwell lobby maintained where possible.
Carpark 12 – Electric Vehicle Car Charging Points
There will be four electric vehicle car charging points installed within Car park 12 for use by staff, students and visitors. To allow the completion of the works, circa 12 parking bays will be removed from service from the evening of Sunday, 25th January 2015 until the evening of Friday 30th January 2015. There will also be an isolation of the carpark lighting and sports pitch lighting on Monday, 2nd February 2015 from 10.00am until 14.00.

Christmas shut down
As you may be aware there was a large drive throughout the University to turn off as many non-critical electrical items over the holiday period as possible. This year saw support from numerous members of staff throughout every department. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances the software monitoring the University’s energy consumption failed to restart during a potential threat to the server that hosts it. Therefore, the data for the holiday period was not collected. We are able to obtain campus wide electricity consumption for Christmas day that can be compared to last year, as well as comparing the average consumption between the total break period this year and last.
On a similar note, during the holiday period ECD staff noted items of equipment that were left on. In some cases there may be a legitimate reason why things were still on. However, there are still areas for improvement. The main items that were shown to be left on were personal computers, PC monitors, office lights and dashboard wall mounted TV screens. Go Green Leaders will soon be notified what particular items were found to be left on within their department in order to see what could have been turned off.
We intend to propose to repeat this exercise over a 4 day period at Easter; allowance will be made for any electrical consumption that is the result of prearranged or unavoidable activities.
Please do not let this issue hinder the good work that was achieved prior to the break and hopefully we will be able to show some positive results from the limited amount of data available.
If you have any questions aboutwhat can be turned off please .

Projects – Main Building
Labs for LHS MB634 and extending MB534
We are refurbishing the former cancer research laboratory MB634 and constructing three separate laboratory areas for Biology, Bioengineering and a Consumables Store. The main lab area will be used for both Biological and Chemical work including space for the new ARCHA fellow to work alongside current staff doing similar lab activities particularly histology.
The space from MB534 towards D Stair has been cleared to extend MB534. The new lab will cater for increasing number of students and moving the project lab from the temporary home on the 4th Floor will make it much more flexible in terms of teaching larger numbers within the complex of teaching laboratories, particularly using a modern AV system which utilises the existing equipment were possible.
The stripping out work is substantially complete with new walls and services being installed. The contractor continues to use E lift and there is a skip and material storage compound in Potter Street.
Work commenced on 15th December and is due for completion on 2nd April 2015.
