This master should be used by designers working on Port of Portland construction projects and by designers working for PDX tenants (“Tenants”). Usage notes highlight a few specific editing choices, however the entire section should be evaluated and edited to fit specific project needs.

SECTION 233400 - HVAC FANS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  DESCRIPTION

  1. This section describes centrifugal fans, in-line centrifugal fans, roof exhaust fans, plug fans, roof vents, small cabinet fans, propeller fans, and pressure blowers.

1.4  SUBMITTALS

  1. For systems, equipment, and components specified herein, submit product/material data; shop drawings; operation and maintenance data; as-constructed data; installation, startup, and testing manuals; operation and maintenance manuals; and as-constructed drawings.
  2. Shop Drawings: Include dimensions and details of construction.
  3. Product Data: Include performance of fans.
  4. Provide certified sound power ratings for each fan.

Use only if Commissioning Section 019100 is included in the project manual.

  1. For systems, equipment, and components specified herein, submit commissioning plans and schedules; checkout, startup, operational, functional and final acceptance test plans, procedures, checklists, and reports; and operation and maintenance training plans.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  CENTRIFUGAL FANS

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Pace, Trane, Barry, Twin City, Peerless, Aerovent, Acme, Greenheck, Cook, or pre-bid approved equal.
  2. Description: Centrifugal or utility type centrifugal fans as indicated, standard factory finish, AMCA rated.
  3. Fans:
  4. Single width, single inlet, double width, double inlet, forward curved, backward inclined, or air foil blades as scheduled.
  5. Welded steel housing with sloped cut-off plates, spun-steel or die formed inlet cone, and welded steel supports.
  6. Statically and dynamically balanced within its own bearings with a maximum full amplitude shaft deflection at bearings not to exceed 0.001 inch at 1200 rpm, grease packed pillow block sealed bearings with not less than two pillow blocks per fan assembly. L-10 bearing life of 80,000 hours minimum in accordance with AFBMA standards.
  7. Motor: Integrally mounted, 1800 rpm maximum, with pre-lubricated sealed ball bearings. See Section 230500, Common Work Results for HVAC, for further motor requirements.
  8. Drive: Sized for 150 percent of motor horsepower, cast iron adjustable sheaves, V-belt type, sheaves statically and dynamically balanced, multiple belt drives on units over 2 hp. Metal guard over drive, OSHA approved. Provide fixed sheaves on units over 5 hp. Replace fan sheaves as necessary to obtain desired results. Include allowance for one sheave change for fans with fixed sheaves.
  9. Provide vibration isolation as specified.
  10. Kitchen Hood Exhausters: Provide non-sparking wheel assembly, fully welded scroll, and scroll drain units designed for use in kitchen hood applications.
  11. Provide fully welded scroll and scroll drains on fans subject to moist air streams.
  12. Fans exposed to weather shall have heavy gauge protective covers over bearings and shaft assembly.
  13. Provide fan outlets with removable angles and bolts for attaching flexible connections or discharge dampers.
  14. Sound power level (re: 10-12 watts) at fan inlet and discharge when producing CFM at static pressure shall not exceed the following in any octave band:

2.2  ROOF EXHAUST FANS

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Carnes, Penn, Greenheck, Jennaire, Cook, Acme, Briedert, or prebid approved equal.
  2. General Description: Provide curb-mounted centrifugal roof exhauster.
  3. Fans:
  4. Provide single-width, single-inlet, airfoil blades.
  5. Provide one piece heavy gauge spun aluminum construction, steel inlet bell, arranged for curb mounting.
  6. Statically and dynamically balanced within its own bearings; grease packed pillow block sealed bearings shall not have less than two pillow blocks per fan assembly.
  7. Motor: Integrally mounted, 1800 rpm maximum, with prelubricated sealed ball bearings. Provide two speed motors where specified. See Section 230500, Common Work Results for HVAC, for further motor requirements.
  8. Drive: Sized for 150 percent of motor horsepower, cast iron adjustable sheaves, V-belt type, sheaves statically and dynamically balanced, with multiple belt drive on all units over 2 hp.
  9. Provide fan wheel and motor mounted on integral double deflection neoprene isolators.
  10. Accessories: Provide bird screen, gravity backdraft damper, disconnect switch under enclosure, and roof curb compatible with roof construction. Greenheck GPI, or pre-bid approved equal.

2.3  PLUG FAN

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Pace, Tempmaster, Twin City Blower, Barry, Cook, Acme, or pre-bid approved equal.
  2. Description: Centrifugal plug fan, horizontal arrangement, with motor, drive, mounted on a common welded steel base, AMCA rated.
  3. Fan: SWSI, Arrangement 1 airfoil blade wheel with inlet cone, statically and dynamically balanced as an assembly, with a maximum full amplitude shaft deflection at bearings not to exceed 0.001 inch at 1200 rpm.
  4. Motor: 1800 rpm, with prelubricated sealed ball bearings, mounted on an adjustable steel base. See Section 230500, Common Work Results for HVAC, for further motor requirements.
  5. Bearings: Spherical roller bearings, 80,000 hour L-10 life (AFBMA standard), factory lubricated with easily accessible grease fittings.
  6. Drive: Multiple belt with fixed sheaves and OSHA approved metal guard. Size drive for 150percent of motor horsepower.
  7. Vibration Isolation: Provide vibration isolation as specified.
  8. Nominal sound power level (re: 10-12 watts) at fan inlet and discharge when producing cfm at static pressure shall not exceed the following in any octave band:

2.4  ROOF VENT

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Carnes, Penn, Greenheck, Acme, Briedert, Cook, or pre-bid approved equal.
  2. Description: Heavy gauge galvanized steel, low silhouette, roll formed rib sections, exterior baked enamel finish with interior gray prime coat, suitable for curb mounting, with bird screen and natural aluminum mill finish.
  3. Accessories: Roof curb compatible with roof construction.

2.5  INLINE CENTRIFUGAL FANS

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Greenheck BSQ, Penn, Cook, Acme, Carnes, or pre-bid approved equal.
  2. Description: Inline centrifugal, belt driven, cabinet fan, AMCA rated, backward inclined wheel, heavy gauge steel housing adequately braced with all edges sealed, externally mounted 1800 rpm motor, with hinged access doors and disconnect switch. Provide energy efficient motor as specified. See Section 230500, Common Work Results for HVAC, for further motor requirements.

2.6  PROPELLER FANS

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: Greenheck, Pace, Carnes, Penn, Jennaire, Cook, Acme, Briedert, American Coolair, Acme, Aerovent, or equal.
  2. Description: Axial flow panel mounted sidewall propeller fan, belt drive, belt guard, OSHA approved screens, and gravity backdraft damper, disconnect, supply or exhaust.
  3. Motor: 1800 rpm maximum, pre-lubricated, sealed ball bearings. See Section 230500, Common Work Results for HVAC, for further motor requirements.
  4. Drive: Sized for 150 percent motor horsepower, adjustable sheaves, V-belt drive.

2.7  PRESSURE BLOWERS

  1. Acceptable Manufacturers: American Fan, New York Blower, Acme, Cook, Joy, Penn Ventilator, Twin City, or equal.
  2. Description: Non-sparking type pressure blower with motor and base, AMCA B construction.
  3. Wheel: Radial blade type impeller, spark resistant aluminum construction, statically and dynamically balanced.
  4. Motor: ODP, pre-lubricated, sealed ball bearings, aluminum or steel base. See Section 230500, Common Work Results for HVAC, for further motor requirements.
  5. Housing: Spark-resistant cast aluminum or steel construction, two-piece split housing, and non-ferrous shaft seal to prevent motor shaft sparking.
  6. Vibration Isolation: Provide vibration isolation as specified.
  7. Bearings: Grease-packed pillow-block sealed bearings. L-10 bearing life of 50,000 hours minimum in accordance with AFBMA standards.
  8. Drive: Sized for 150 percent of motor horsepower, cast iron fixed sheaves, multiple belt drives, metal guard, and shall be OSHA approved. Replace fan sheaves as necessary.
  9. Accessories:
  10. Full cutoff blast gate, galvanized steel gate, cast aluminum housing, and thumbscrew lock. Blast gates shall be required only where a single fan serves multiple vehicles for balancing of ductwork.
  11. Flapper Cap Roof Termination: Heavy gauge aluminized steel, stack cover with counterbalance, high temperature gasket hinge with brass busing, stainless steel attachment band, and bolt. Hapco, or equal.
  12. Application: For use with vehicle exhaust extraction system.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  FLEXIBLE CONNECTIONS

  1. Provide flexible connections on all inlet and discharge duct connections.

3.2  CENTRIFUGAL FANS

  1. Mount on isolator base on roof rails.
  2. Provide vented roof curb at roof penetration in accordance with NFPA 96.

3.3  ROOF EXHAUST FANS

  1. Mount fan on roof curb in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Anchor fan to curb and curb to roof. Coordinate roof opening size and curb location.
  2. Connect ductwork.

3.4  PLUG FANS

  1. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Mount on isolators as specified.
  3. Lubricate bearings as recommended by the bearing manufacturer.
  4. Startup: After installation and before starting:
  5. Check fan isolation for freedom of motion.
  6. Statically and dynamically balance fan as an assembly, with a maximum full amplitude shaft deflection at bearings not to exceed 0.001 inch at 1200 rpm.
  7. Engage the manufacturer to perform pre-startup and startup tasks.

3.5  ROOF VENTS

  1. Install curb on roof, flash and counter flash, and mount cap using lag screws for wood and machine bolts for metal.
  2. Make ductwork connections.

3.6  INLINE CENTRIFUGAL FANS

  1. Mount in ductwork using vibration isolation as specified.
  2. Connect ductwork using flexible connections.
  3. Arrange for unobstructed access to access door.

3.7  PROPELLER FANS

  1. Mount fan where specified.

3.8  PRESSURE BLOWERS

  1. Mount using vibration isolators and miscellaneous steel as required. Arrange mounting to resist fan thrust and rotation.
  2. Make ductwork connections using flexible connections.
  3. Install flapper cap roof termination above roof.

Choose one of the following two articles. Use Commissioning if Section 019100 is included; otherwise use Testing.

3.9  COMMISSIONING

  1. Commission the systems, equipment, and components specified herein.

3.10  TESTING

  1. Check out, start up, and test the systems, equipment, and components specified herein.
