How to prevent school shootings

Ayoob, Massad. "Arm Teachers to Stop Shootings."Online.wsj.com. Wall Street Jorunal, 21 May 1999. Web. 3 May 2013

This is an argument by Massad Ayoob who was the director of Lethal Force Institute in Concord, N. H. at the time it was written. This is a great argument that tries to persuade its readers to believe that teachers is a very viable option to protect students which is contrary to our argument . We will find the weak points of this argument to further prove that there is a better way to protect students that don’t involve arming teachers.

Brocklin, Val V. "Arming Teachers in Schools: An Argument against."PoliceOne.com. N.p., 20 Feb. 2013. Web. 30 Mar. 2013.

Val Van Brocklin is an international law enforcement trainer and wthas a state and federal prosecutor. She writes about the many reasons teachers shouldn't have weapons to protect children. She shares a personal story of a tactical simulator she participated on as a school teacher after having much tactical pistol training and she killed an undercover cop, two innocent bystanders and got killed without saving anyone. We will use this to help readers understand that teachers are incapable of handling a shooter in a high stress situation without the possibility of hurting even more students or getting themselves killed as well.

Johnson, Robers S. "Metal Detector Searches: An Effective Means to Help Keep Weapons out of Schools." Journal of Law and Education 29.2 (2000): 197-204. Print.

This is a study done in 16 schools in new york that had some of the highest rates of weapon possession in the county and found with the help of metal detectors and random contraband searches the weapon and contraband possession was reduced. We will use this source to help validate that there have been metal detectors used in the past and many weapons have been confiscated as a result. This will also help prove the costs of doing such practices are more than worth it for the safety of students.

"List ofSchool Shootingsin the United States." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, 29 Mar. 2013. Web. 29 Mar. 2013.

This is a list on Wikipedia that shows all of the school shootings that have occurred in the United States. It shows who were the people that committed the school shooting, where the shooting took place, and how many people were injured or killed. We will use this information to make statistics that show exactly what percent of school shootings are done by students. We will also show what percentage of school shootings occur inside of the school and what percentage occurred on school grounds but outside of school. Lastly we will use this data to determine what will be the most effective way to prevent further school shootings (ex. metal detectors won't be as effective if 90% of school shootings occur outside of the school building)

Trump, Kenneth S. "Arming Teachers and School Staff with Guns." Web log post.School Safety and School Security Experts:. N.p., 1999. Web. 30 Apr. 2013

United States. Department of Education. National Center for Education Statistics.. Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2011. 002nd ed. Vol. 2012. N.p.: n.p., n.d. Web. 29 Apr. 2013.

These are statistics that show what type of security measures that schools are already taking to their children for example what percentage of high schools use walk through metal detectors. We will use this information to further show that the vast majority of schools aren’t doing enough to protect their students.
