Bellevue Gardens Apartments
Updated 10-19-17

The following information provides guidance to Bellevue Gardens Apartments tenants who need extermination services.

Note that most of the instructions below refer to suspected bed bugs. However, the reporting methods, the encouragement to seek medical evaluation and the guidance to refrain from using other treatments applies to all bugs.

A.  Reporting and Process Overview

1.  You are advised to seek medical evaluation and care via University Health Services or other physician of choice in the event that you suspect that you have been bitten by a bed bug or other insect.

2.  Call Work Control at 513-558-2500 between 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (Monday-Friday) in the event that you need extermination services. Provide your building/apartment number, the type of bug, where you have seen the bug in your apartment, your name and your email address.

Work Control will contact you to let you know when the exterminator is scheduled to visit your apartment.

3.  Refrain from using spray or other bug treatments before or after the exterminator treats your apartment. Other sprays or chemicals may render the exterminator’s treatment ineffective. Using your own treatment may delay the exterminator’s ability to treat. Depending on the treatment used, the exterminator may need to wait up to 7-21 days to retreat according to the Ohio Revised Code.

4.  Tenants will have to leave the apartment while exterminators apply treatments. Inspections and treatments usually take less than ten minutes.

5.  If the presence of bed bugs is indicated:

a.  The exterminator will treat the affected room and make recommendations as to whether a tenant should replace furniture due to fabric tears.

b.  Depending on the treatment used, the exterminator may need to wait up to 7-21 days to retreat according to the Ohio Revised Code. A period of at least 21 days after treatment is needed to complete a canine inspection.

c.  Work Control should notify the tenant and Margaret Fogler, Assistant Director of Housing, () of the results.

6.  If the presence of bed bugs is NOT indicated,

a.  The room will be treated even if the presence of bed bugs is not confirmed.

b.  Work Control should notify the tenant and Margaret Fogler, Assistant Director of Housing, () of the results.

B.  Bed Bug Room Preparation Instructions

If a bug is noticed anywhere in the room, the resident should collect a sample by placing it in a clear container/bag to show the residence hall staff, who can show the exterminator. Often what is believed to be a bed bug is actually not.

Work Control will notify you of the date the exterminator will visit your apartment.

Before the Exterminator Arrives:

a.  DO NOT remove your mattress or other furniture as this may spread bed bugs to other rooms.

b.  Wash all bedding, clothing, or throw rugs in the sleeping area in hot water and machine dry. You may wish to keep clean clothing in sealed plastic until treatment.

c.  Be sure to remove all covering from all beds in the room that day. Clean up all trash and clutter. The cleaner and less cluttered your room is, the better the inspection and any treatment can be. Inspections cannot be properly conducted if the beds are not clear.

Check bed bugs’ hiding spaces such as behind bulletin boards or other wall-hanging items, behind drawers/pencil trays, under furniture such as dressers, inside luggage/duffel bags and inside laundry bags/hampers.

C.  Bed Bug Post-Treatment Instructions

After treatment, continue to keep the floor as clear as possible of clothing, paper and other clutter.

Check bed bugs’ hiding spaces such as behind bulletin boards or other wall-hanging items, behind drawers/pencil trays, under furniture such as dressers, inside luggage/duffel bags and inside laundry bags/hampers. Report your findings to the residence hall staff.

Vacuum the floor, including baseboard area. After vacuuming, remove the filter bag or contents of the canister and place in a sealed trash bag to avoid spreading the bed bugs to other areas. Place the sealed trash bag in the dumpster.

D.  Additional Treatment

a.  The first treatment takes seven to ten days to show results. If you notice additional activity of bed bugs after seven days, report your findings to Work Control

b.  When the presence of bed bugs has been confirmed, the exterminator will automatically visit a space after seven days. This visit is used to monitor the progress of treatment and schedule additional inspections/treatment as needed. Once notified, Work Control will notify you with the next scheduled inspection date. For maximum effectiveness, tenants are encouraged to follow the room preparation steps in advance of the next visit by the exterminator.
