Democrats slam Bush proposal

WASHINGTON -- A Democratic strategist says President Bush's newest proposal to overhaul Social Security would put seniors at great financial risk and threaten "the most successful social program in American history."

Last night in a news conference, the president proposed asking future middle and higher-income retirees to accept smaller benefit checks than they're currently slated to receive.

Bob Weiner (WEE'-nuhr) says that's pitting rich against poor.

And he also questions the notion that the program is in economic peril.

He says "Social Security does not have a financial crisis."

He says the president is simply looking to tap into the program's surplus to pay for other government programs.
