Counsellor’s Job Description

Volunteer title:LGBT Counsellor

Purpose:To be part of the Carers Counselling Project providing a counselling service to mainly (but not exclusively) carers in Hackney and the City.

Key tasks:To take referrals from the Counselling Service Coordinator

To agree counselling contracts of 12 sessions with

individual carers (extensions beyond this are possible with agreement from the Counselling Coordinator).

To follow City and Hackney Carers Centre Emergency Procedure when necessary.

To keep records in line with the project guidelines.

To attend group supervision once a month currently on a Tuesday evening, 6-8pm.

To attend induction and training sessions as required.

To travel to locations in Hackney for counselling sessions.

To carry out the above tasks in accordance with the Equal Opportunities and Confidentiality policies and other relevant policies and procedures of City and Hackney Carers Centre and with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework for Good Practice in counselling and Psychotherapy.

(Clinical Responsibility is held with Penny Collier - Counselling Supervisor)

3 / To have successfully completed, or be in the 2nd year of a course in counselling or psychotherapy and have the ability to put this knowledge and understanding into practice. / 

5 / An understanding of anti-discrimination issues and a commitment to City and Hackney Carers Centre Equal Opportunities Policy and practices. / 
6 / To have had your own counselling or psychotherapy for a minimum of 1 year. / 

9 / The ability to speak a 2nd language. / 
10 / Previous experience of counselling individuals. / 
