SLT MEETING 4/29/14

In attendance: Oliver Glover, Geoff Spencer, Vicki Douvikas, Wendy McElhinny, Diane Osborne, Carrie Booker, Janelle Groff, Allison Green, Kathy Jay, Christie Lyles, Andrea Love, Joeie Puckett, Heather Ramsey, Amy Cook, Kathleen Little, Jeff Ruppenthal, Joel Gilland, Adrienne Pinto, Kirsten Hall, Karen Steffens.

  1. Jeff went over the 2014 proposed budget for CMS which was a minimum 3% raise for CMS employees. He reviewed that NC ranked 46th in pay for teachers which makes it hard to be competitive with other states and counties. CMS teachers have received one raise in the last 5 years and 59% of employees earn less than the Mecklenburg county living wage. He discussed the importance of having our voices heard over this issue and MIE has been asked to attend the June 3rd County Commissioners Meeting to show support of the proposed budget. On June 11 the Superintendant is asking everyone to attend to show support for pay increase for teachers.
  2. EOG Testing – Jeff said EOG testing schedule will be in this week Thursday folders. It is later this year to make room for the testing/scanning/retesting for the Read to Achieve Initiative. As of now 75% of 3rd grade have met the criteria (MAP and TRC testing) to move on.. The Read to Achieve Initiative in 3rd grade is pivotal this year. May 23 is the first day of EOG testing with that day being the Reading EOG.
  3. Name change to Mountain Island Lake Academy has been approved.
  4. Map Testing scores have shown great growth in our school and greater than the NLC. 3rd grade grew 6.9 points, 4th grade grew double digits and 5th grade grew 25 points. Analyzed data confirms that MAP testing is very consistent with EOG scores. Kindergarten doubled scores from last year. Question was posed whether we analyzed data better or changed way of teaching. Joeie responded that it was a little of both, we learned how to use data better which helped teachers to adjust teaching style. Vicki said the correlation of students MAPS and EOGS helped them target the students who needed extra help and they have been able to get them more help to improve their scores.
  5. ENCORE –Christy Lyles new name for the time to be used for reteaching, enrichment, clubs, etc. This time will be used 45 minutes 2x a week on Thursday and Friday. Students will be grouped for enrichment, training, clubs, etc. This is still a work in progress but steadily moving forward. Looking at how Morehead uses their time.
  6. School Culture, Climate, Pride

Jaspreet is co-chair. The focus group outcome was less than desired. Haven’t gotten feedback yet from the leader, and didn’t get to the core of information we needed but a paper survey will be coming. Discussion of reorganizing the 5th grade promotional ceremony since they will be moving to middle but still at same school. The final week at MIE will be the final MIE Spirit week where everyone is asked to wear all MIE apparel since it will be the last time MIE will be used. There are plans for reorganizing the 6th grade community area to make it more of a community area for everyone to use. Christy suggested we change the name of the hallways to reflect character traits that we want our kids to remember and emulate. We will have a New Year Celebration in August welcoming our NEW YEAR for MILA, complete with red carpet entrance, photo shoot….big event to be planned. Janelle is helping to work on the staff retreat/team building to go on this summer. Christy also showed the SWOT analysis data

  1. Janelle showed the new ideas on logos. Something to reflect all ages. Changes included a different bear, different fonts. At the end, Janelle left the suggested logos on table and everyone checked the ones they liked the best.
