Reasons new version is better
b / W -Hello, how can I help you?
C – I want to stop smoking. / W - Hello, thank for you coming to see me.
C - That’s OK, thank you for making the time. / Add and amend
The first version moved very quickly to talking about problems and focused on what I can do to help them, rather than what they can do to help themselves.
c / W – How long have you smoked?
C – Since I was 11. / W – No problem. I was just thinking how will you know that this session has been useful?
C – I will feel confident that I can stop smoking. / Add
In the original version I focused on the problem, here I am focusing on the preferred future.
d / W – Why did you start smoking?
C – Cos my friends smoked and I thought it looked cool. / W – So right now, on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is not confident at all, and 10 is super confident, how confident are you that you can stop smoking?
C – I don’t know, maybe a 6. / Add
They have made a clear statement of what they want, so I’m using a scale to amplify that.
e / W - So why do you want to stop now?
C – Because I’m pregnant. / W – What is giving you that level of confidence?
C – You see I’m pregnant, and I really want to do the best for my baby. / Add and amend
I have got to a similar place now as I did before, but in a much more solution focused way.
