EXT. HAMPTON HOUSE – DAYA blonde haired woman who appears to be in her late twenties to early thirties stands in front of Hampton House. She is JESSICA CONNORS, a TV personality with a warm inviting smile and immaculate Make-Up.Hampton House is a particularly understated building, nothing special looking, and more the kind you would pass without giving it a second glance.
JESSICA CONNORS
(To camera)
Hello and welcome to a new series of Haunted Houses where we hope to uncover the mysteries of ghosts, the occult and the unexplainable.
Jessica turns and walks to the front door of Hampton house. When she reaches the door she begins to push it slowly open
INT. HAMPTON HOUSE – SAME
Jessica enters the house through the front door and turns to face the camera.
CONNORS
(CONT’D)
My name is Jessica Connors and I will be your guide through this journey of discovery.
A middle aged man, wearing a gray suit and red tie walks in to shot and stands next to Jessica. He is Frank Bush, resident psychic with a smile that can be viewed as either charming or irritating.
CONNORS
(CONT’D)
With us we have our very own psychic Frank Bush.
Frank waves
FRANK BUSH
Hello. My job is to liaise with the spirit world as we move from one location to the next and try to tap in to the residual energies that may have been left behind.
Jessica leaves Frank standing and walks off to one side. The camera follows her so that three more people come into view.
There is JIM COLLINS, early twenties, and a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy. He seems to be busy setting up some cameras, which are linked to a set of monitors.
CLAIRE DANES. Mid twenties – early thirties. She is helping Jim with the setting up
And finally GORDON LEWIS. He is holding a microphone and small tape recorder.
As Jessica introduces them she points each one out.
CONNORS
With us we have our very own team of paranormal investigators who will document anything that we may discover. Here we can see Jim and Claire setting up the special thermal cameras that we hope will catch some spiritual activity at some point
JIM
Hello.
CLAIRE
Hi.
CONNORS
And Gordon who will hopefully catch the spirits conversations on his recorder.
GORDON
Hey.
Jessica turns and walks back towards Frank. The camera follows.
CONNORS
In this episode we find ourselves at Hampton House.
CUT TO:
A photograph of Hampton House when it was first build in the late 1800’s.
CONNORS
(CONT’D, V.O.)
Hampton House was built in 1897 by Harold James Hampton for his fiancé Julie Anne Clemens.
We now see a photograph of the happy couple on what is obviously their wedding day.
CONNORS
(CONT’D, V.O.)
To the town it was a fairy tale wedding. Two people desperately in love getting married and settling down to start a family. It should have been perfect.
CUT TO:
Jessica stands in a room of shelves. Each shelf is filled with books from floor to ceiling.
CONNORS
(CONT’D)
Unfortunately Julie Anne suffered complications and both she and their child died in childbirth.
(A Beat)
A few months later Harold Hampton was discovered dead in this very room. The official records say he died of a heart attack but many suspect he died of a broken heart.
Jessica walks towards the only door in and out of the room. When she reaches the door she stops and turns to camera.
CONNORS
(CONT’D)
It is said that he still resides here, somewhere. Many people who have visited this house have reported sightings of a man in old clothes and the sound of a newborn baby crying. And that is why we have come to this otherwise peaceful town. To uncover the mystery of Hampton House
Jessica opens the door and exits.
INT. DINING ROOM – NIGHT
Jessica and Frank are stood in the dining room. Behind them we can see a large dining table with six chairs placed around it. On the table are some monitors with cables running off to some unseen source.
The curtains are open so that we can see the night sky outside. Trees blow in the small breeze.
CONNORS
(CONT’D)
So here we are in the dining room.
(To Frank)
So are you getting anything?
Frank closes his eyes and concentrates.
BUSH
Well I can’t sense any spirits but there is some definite residual energies.
CONNORS
Residual energies?
BUSH
Yeah. This is the energy left behind when you pass on. A sort of spiritual photograph of what you did in your life.
Frank opens his eyes and turns to look at a large wooden door.
He walks over to the door and puts his hand on it.
BUSH
(CONT’D)
I’m getting a strong sense of something behind this door.
CONNORS
A ghost perhaps!
BUSH
I’m not sure
(A Beat)
Matthew, who is it? Matthew?
CONNORS
Who is Matthew?
BUSH
Matthew is my spirit guide.
CONNORS
Spirit guide?
BUSH
He is a guardian angel of sorts. He helps me tap into the spiritual plane and prevents wayward spirits and angry souls from possessing me by force.
Connors
So you can be possessed?
BUSH
Oh yes. And I have many times. Sometimes it is important that we learn what the spirit wants so we can help them move on. By possessing me they get a voice.
(A Beat)
But some malevolent spirits possess mediums like me so that they can hurt and abuse.
Frank pushes open the door. Both he and Jessica walk into
INT. KITCHEN – SAMEJessica leans back against a counter. There is a small collection of cups just behind her.Frank stands in the middle of the room and smiles.
BUSH
I can see a small boy
Connors
So what is he doing?
BUSH
He is just standing next to the fridge.
(To unseen ghost)
What is your name?
(A Beat)
Sa… Sam… Sammy. His name is Sammy.
connors
So does he mean us any harm?
BUSH
No. I wouldn’t say so. He just looks like a child who wants to play.
We hear a noise like something ceramic is being scraped along a rough surface
.
Jessica and Frank both jump in mild shock and turn towards the cups on the counter.
One of the cups has moved away from the rest of the group and is now about a foot away from them.
CONNORS
Did you see that?
bush
It seems someone wants our attention
connors
Come on lets try another room
They walk toward the door. Suddenly the cup that moved along the counter seemingly jumps of the counter and shatters on the floor.
Jessica and Frank rush out of the room in a hurry. The camera turns to look at the broken cup on the floor. As it rises to follow Jessica and Frank out of the room we get the briefest glimpse of a figure standing in the window. We can’t see any real details because the figure is transparent and it vanishes almost instantly but we can that it was a man.
INT. DINING ROOM – SAME
Jessica and Frank walk into the room from the Kitchen. Gordon walks over with the RECORDER and MICROPHONE in his hand.
CONNORS
We just saw a cup move.
GORDON
No.
Connors
Yeah.
gordon
Where?
CONNORS
In the kitchen just there!
GORDON
You sure?
connors
It jumped off the counter and onto the floor.
Gordon walks through the door and closes it behind him.
Jessica and Fran walk side by side to another door on the other side of the room.
Jessica pushes the door open and turns to face the camera.
connors
Well while Gordon checks out the kitchen, me and Frank will exp…
There is a loud thud, as the door slams shut behind her.
connors
(CONT’D, To Frank)
Did you shut the door?
Some text appears at the bottom of the screen
TEXT
No records of a Sam or Sammy ever dying at this house have been discovered.
BUSH
No. I can’t reach it from here.
connors
Well somebody did. It just slammed shut.
(To Unseen Cameraman)
Did you see it shut?
The camera moves up and down
CAMERMAN
(O.S)
Yeah. Not just a breeze?
connors
Well I can’t feel any… Shit can you feel that.
Jessica starts to run her hands as if she was stood in the middle of a huge freezer.
connors
(CONT’D)
It’s bloody freezing.
(To Frank and Camerman)
Can’t you feel that.
BUSH
It’s definitely getting colder.
connors
Fuck it’s cold.
Jessica suddenly jumps
connors
(SHOCKED)
Something just touched me!
Frank practically takes a step back as he turns and looks at her.
BUSH
You sure?
connors
I’m telling you. Something brushed past my arm.
Jessica grabs hold of her left arm just above the elbow.
connors
(CONT’D)
Can we move on now?
Frank slowly opens the door and he and Jessica walk out, followed closely by the cameraman.
cut to:
int. kitchen – same
Gordon walks into the kitchen and looks at the counter. There on top can be seen the cups, all perfectly placed, none of them have been moved.
He glances down toward the floor where the shattered cup should be but there is nothing there.
gordon
(Sighs)
Nothing here.
Gordon lifts the microphone and presses record just to be sure. He makes a quick sweep but nothing can be heard.
HE is just about to switch it off when a noise not unlike the static on an un-tuned radio can be heard through the speakers.
gordon
(CONT’D)
Is there anybody there?
(A Beat)
Please. If there is someone there who wishes to speak with me could you please give me a sign? Can you make a sound or move an object?
Gordon listens and waits
GORDON
(CONT’D)
Please. If there is somebody there who wishes to make contact can you do something?
Nothing at first but then gradually the static on the recorder intensifies. Through the static can be heard a strange sound. Gradually the sound becomes clearer until we know what we are listening to. It is the unmistakable sound of a newborn child crying.
GORDON
(CONT’D)
Shit.
CUT TO:
INT. MAIN BEDROOM – SAME
Jessica and Frank are stood in the main bedroom either side of the bed. We are seeing them through a night vision camera with that familiar green color.
bush
There is a woman here. Her name was… Matthew what is her name?
(A Beat)
Jill? Ju…June? No. Julie! Her name was Julie.
connors
(To Frank)
Maybe the wife of the man who built the house?
BUSH
She is such a sweet woman.
connors
So she is here?
bush
She is just behind you Jessie. Now she is moving towards the door.
Frank suddenly looks like he has smelled something unpleasant. Jessica looks concerned
bush
(CONT’D)
Wait. Now there is something else!
CONNORS
Can you see it?
bush
No. I can just feel the badness it is leaving.
Frank suddenly shivers like he has received a mild electric shock. Jessica rushes around the bed toward him
CONNORS
Frank? Frank?
BUSH
Don’t let him Matthew. Matt don’t let him.
For a few seconds Frank is stood on one spot, his entire body twitching. Then he just stops.
Jessica puts her arm over Franks shoulder.
connors
What happened?
bush
Something was trying to get in.
connors
Get in? You mean possess you?
Bush
Exactly. They do that sometimes but Matthew can normally stop them.
(A Beat)
Just give me two seconds.
CUT TO:
INT. DINING ROOM – SAME
Jim is busy with adjusting the picture on a monitor as Claire moves a small camera around the room. On the monitor we can see brief images of the room and its occupants as seen through thermal cameras.
On one sweep past Jim we can see what appears to be the shape of a tall figure stood next to him, except where Jim is red and yellow because of the body heat, this figure is blue which means that he is freezing cold.
As Claire moves the camera away from Jim, both shapes vanish of the side of the screen.
JIM
See that?
Claire
What?
JIM
Put your camera on me again.
Claire does as she is instructed.
Only Jim’s shape can be seen on the screen.
CONNORS
(V.O)
So with Claire and Jim in the dining room and Gordon checking out the kitchen
INT. SMALL BEDROOM –SAME
Jessica and Frank are stood just inside a small bedroom that looks bare apart from a small bed and one lone wardrobe in the far corner.
CONNORS
(CONT’D, V.O)
Me and Frank decided to investigate the small bedroom. It is here that many have heard a small child crying.
CONNORS
Here we are in the small bedroom. It might look peaceful on your screens but this is where many people swear they have heard a child crying.
Jessica turns to Frank
CONNORS
(CONT’D)
You want to carry on.
BUSH
Yep, I’m fine
CONNORS
(V.O)
Earlier Frank was taken by surprise as a bad source as he puts it tried to force itself into him
We cut to a scene taken from earlier of Frank in the middle of being almost possessed by an unseen force.
CONNORS
(CONT’D, V.O)
Fortunately for us, Frank with the help of his spirit guide Matthew, was able to stop anything serious from happening.
We cut back to Jessica and Frank in the bedroom.
Frank has walked over to the wardrobe.
BUSH
(To Jessica)
Jessie come over here.
Jessica walks over and stands next to Frank.
She suddenly folds her arms around her chest and shivers like she is cold.
CONNORS
F…F…Fuck. It f…feels like earlier.
The left wardrobe door suddenly begins to slowly open by itself.
Jessica and Frank take a step back.
The door stops opening.
CONNORS
(To Camera)
Did you see that? That door just opened by itself.
Her head begins to dart around, looking for something, anything that may have caused it.
Nothing
We are treated to a flash back of the wardrobe door opening
FLASHBACK
The left wardrobe door suddenly begins to slowly open by itself.
Jessica and Frank take a step back.
The door stops opening.
CONNORS
(To Camera)
Did you see that? That door just opened by itself.
Back to real time, Jessica and Frank have turned their attention away from the wardrobe and are now looking at the bed. Jessica still looks shaken but Frank is smiling. He stares at the bed like he sees something pleasant there.
BUSH
(To Bed)
Hey.
CONNORS
What is it?
BUSH
Sammy.
CONNORS
Sammy? Here?
BUSH
Yeah. There he is sitting on the bed.
CONNORS
So who is he? Why is he here?
BUSH
I’m not sure.
(To one side)
Matthew who is he? What does he want?
(A Beat)
Matthew?
(A beat)
Right. Accident. Right
Jessica walks over to the bed and stares intently at it but nothing can be seen.
BUSH
(CONT’D)
Right. Oh poor lamb.
CONNORS
And?
BUSH
He doesn’t belong here. By that I mean he was not a child of this house.
(A Beat)
According to Matthew he used to play here, he and his friends.
(A Beat)
Right. Got it. Poor lamb. He was playing a game of chase when he lost his footing and fell down the main stairs.
Jessica looks shocked by this news then slowly her face turns to sadness.
BUSH
(CONT’D)
He is such a sweet boy. Playful and mischievous. He likes to move things and hide stuff but he doesn’t mean any harm. It’s just his way of saying here I am.
CONNORS
So was it. Sammy is it?
Frank nods his head yes
CONNORS
(CONT’D)
So was it Sammy who moved the cup.
BUSH
No. No it was not.
Jessica walks toward the door. As she passes by a small ball of light can be seen shooting across the screen in front of her.
FLASHBACK
A slow motion replay of the ball of light moving past Jessica
CONNORS
(V.O)
Was this an orb, what most believe to be a spiritual being in their most basic form or was it simply a bit of dust reflecting a piece of light.
Another slow motion replay of the orb.
INT. UPSTAIRS HALL – SAME
Jessica and Frank stand in the hall looking into the camera.
CONNORS
Well so far we have checked out the kitchen and two of the bed…
CAMERAMAN
(O.S)
…What was that?
CONNORS
What?
The camera spins around to face the opposite direction. The hall is empty. The camera spins back around to face Jessica and Frank.
CAMERAMAN
I thought I felt someone breathe on my neck.
CONNORS
Are you sure?
CAMERAMAN
I’m telling you someone was breathing on my neck and then there wasn’t anybody there.
