Job Description

Sport Program Coordinator

  1. General Description

Reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle, this position is responsible for the program delivery of Aboriginal Sport and Recreation in the Yukon. The Sport Program Coordinator primary responsibilities will include program planning, delivering and reporting.

  1. Role

i)A Planner by participating with volunteers, partners and staff to plan, implement and report on YASC Sport programs (instruction programs, coaching clinics, official clinics, competitions, etc.);

ii)An Implementer in terms of carrying out programs and projects, ensuring high quality engaging content and professional delivery;
iii)An Instructor by teaching participants of all ages (K to adults)some of the following sports:Arctic Sports, Dene Games and Archery.

iv)A Communicator in terms of ensuring an effective exchange of information through with YG Education system, school teachers, partners,team members, parents, the Executive Director;

v)A Role Model for youth by showing positive and healthy life-style and behavior.

Reports to:Executive Director of the Yukon Aboriginal Sport Circle

Works with:Volunteers, Casual staff, Yukon Schools, the Yukon Government Sport and Recreation Branch, Community Recreation Associations, and First Nation Governments, etc.

Power of Decision Making:

The Sport Program Coordinator has authority to take measures that are necessary in the daily management of YASC’s programs, in accordance with the current job description and programs descriptions. Beyond these limits, decisions are to be approved by the Executive Director.

  1. Coordinate sport activities, programs and projects
  2. Sport coaching
  3. Sport events/clinics organization
  4. Sport Communication and promotion.

  2. Coordinate, implement and provide written reports on all sport programs, competitions and coaching clinics;
  3. Coordinate school and communities’ visits;
  4. Coordinate and book the sport specific on-call instructors;
  5. Maintain records, registrations and attendances to programs, events and games.
  6. Assist in the organization of teams attending competitions, including fundraising, registration, trials and overall planning;
  7. Assist in the organization of Teams attending games, including fundraising, registration, trials and overall team planning;
  8. Develop/implement and/or assist in other programs that may arise throughout the year;
  9. Sport Coaching (Arctic Sports, Dene Games & Archery)
  10. Demonstrate correct techniques, procedures, use of equipment and exercises to enhance participants' abilities.
  11. Teach the basic rules and strategies of the sport
  12. Present cultural component of the games.
  13. Demonstrate and teach appropriate personal safety skills
  14. Assess participants' levels of ability
  15. Ensure the safety of participants
  16. Build confidence in participants
  17. Evaluate participant progress and assign grades where appropriate
  18. Maintain sports equipment
  19. Participate in sport demonstrations or competitions.
  20. Implement and provide written reports on all sport programs, competitions and coaching clinics;
  21. Maintain records, registrations and attendances to programs, events and games.
  22. Sport events/clinics organization
  23. Assist in planning and implementing the Yukon Arctic Sports Interschool Championship (yearly).
  24. Assist in planning and implementing the Yukon Archery Championships both Indoor and 3D (yearly), the Interschool competition and Archery polar games activity.
  25. Assist in planning and implementing games Trials (NAIG, Canada Winter Games, Archery Nationals, NYO, JNYO, WEIO, AWG etc.)
  26. Assist in planning and implementing coaching and official clinic;
  27. Coordinate activities, programs and projects
  28. Implement and provide written reports on all sport programs, competitions and coaching clinics;
  29. Maintain records, registrations and attendances to programs, events and games.
  30. Assist in the organization of teams attending competitions, including fundraising, registration, trials and overall planning;

  32. Develop/implement and/or assist in other programs that may arise throughout the year;

Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the YASC Board of Directors and/or Executive Director that are consistent with the roles and responsibilities of the Sport Program Coordinator.

  1. Proposed Travel Requirements

Beyond 50km of Office, not overnight2-7 times a year

Within Yukon/Canada 1-3 nights2-5 times a year

Within Canada or the US, 4 or more nights stay0-1 times a year

  1. Professional Development

The Sport Program Coordinator training plan will be developed in consultation with the Executive Director. It will ensure that the Sport Coordinator will be proficient to run Arctic Sports, Dene Games and Archery programs when needed.
Training plan might also include some IT, Coaching trainings, or any other administrative training to ensure efficiency with the tools used by YASC.

  1. Work plans and Performance Appraisal

The Sport Program Coordinator work plans will be developed in consultation with the Executive Director. Performance appraisals will be carried out in accordance with the YASC Personnel Policy.

Hours of Operation:The Sport Program Coordinator will work 37.5 hours per week with flexible hours (some activities are in the evening or on weekends) and will be given time in lieu of overtime. Overtime must be approved prior to being taken.

The Sport Program Instructor will regularly be required to work some weekend and evening hours.

Conditions: Full Time – 37.5 hours/week at $24.00 to $28.00 / hour plus benefits (upon qualification).

Starting date: 15th January 2016
