English Student Advisory Board

The Department of English Student Advisory Board program is designed to promote awareness of and pride in the English Department. Advisory Board members assist the English Major Advisor and faculty with recruitment and retention activities hosted by the University, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Department of English.

Students who participate in the English Student Advisory Board will develop personal leadership and communication skills and will have the opportunity to represent the Department of English and the University in a professional capacity. Additionally, students will earn 1 credit of Engl 398 “English Mentor Experience” in the fall 2018 term; class meetings will be held Fridays from 1:30-2:45pm.

The English Student Advisory Board will help with the following activities:

  • Mentoring freshmen English and Film Studies major;
  • English Major for a Day Visits (one week in March);
  • English Recruitment Activities (may include “Major’s Fair;” Big Red Road Show, etc.);
  • Department Committees (upon request, not regular activity).

Time Commitment

Over the course of each semester,English SAB activities require an average of 1-2 hours per week.

Eligibility

  • Students must be enrolled full time (the equivalent of 12 hours per semester) and in good academic standing;
  • Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above;
  • Students must show genuine enthusiasm about the Department of English;
  • Students must be in good judicial standing with University Housing and Residence Life;
  • Students must have completed (2) academic semesters as an English or Film Studies major;
  • Students must be available during Fall and Spring semester (see time commitments listed above).

Advisory Board Expectations

  • Advisory Board members actively support the mission and values of the Department of English at all times.
  • Advisory Board members must present themselves in a manner consistent with the values of the University in all public spaces and forums including, but not limited to, on and off campus events and online web environments and communities such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Advisory Board members must be present, prepared, and energetic when fulfilling duties at events.
  • Advisory Board members must have a desire to actively support the Department of English in attracting a diverse, talented class of new majors, and must possess a willingness to serve these students through recruitment and retention events and programs.
  • Advisory Board members must possess strong verbal, written, listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Advisory Board members must be responsive to email or social media connections within the designated time period (when a response is requested).
  • Advisory Board members must be reliable, punctual, and responsible for their assignments.
  • Advisory Board members must participate in all training and events (see list above).
  • Advisory Board members should dress appropriately and professionally at events.

Application and Selection Process

  • Students who want to apply should emailor hand-inan application letter andonebriefemail or note of recommendation by the application deadline. The recommendationmust be from the UNL Campus (faculty/staff).You may email . Include [EAB 2018 application] in the subject line, or drop hard copies off at 201 Andrews.
  • Please compose a cover letter in which you introduce yourself as a student and explain why you would make a good candidate to the student advisory board. Your letter should address questions such as: What qualities make you a good candidate for working with prospective and incoming freshmen majors? What experiences in English have been noteworthy? What are your goals and interests related to your major in Englishand/or Film Studies?
  • Students involved in the following activities and/or involvement are encouraged to apply: University Honors Program, UCARE, English Department Internships, the Writing Center, the Walt Whitman Archive, the Willa Cather Archive, Prairie Schooner, Laurus, and/or those on the College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s List.
  • An interview with the English Undergraduate Advisor may be required for short-listed candidates.

Responsibilities

  • All students shall abide by the Student Code of Conduct and applicable rules/policies of the University of Nebraska that pertain to student organizations.
  • All students must attend the organizational training meeting TBA.
  • Participate in other events deemed appropriate by the Department and College.
