Policy:
The UHN/MSH Microbiology Department collaborates with the Human Resources Department at MSH to obtain and retain personnel who are best prepared for the position and provide highest quality services.
Purpose:
The UHN/MSH Microbiology Department provides direction for selecting, training, evaluating and providing opportunities for professional growth of laboratory personnel.
Responsibility:
The department’s management collaborates with the Human Resources Department at MSH to recruit, hire, train, manage and assess personnel. Laboratory personnel are responsible for maintaining individual competence, documenting required continuing education and maintaining their license as required.

Job Qualification
The UHN/MSH microbiology department establishes qualifications for education, experience and skills for each position in the laboratory in accordance with any regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Job Description
The UHN/MSH microbiology department establishes and maintains the job descriptions for each position in the laboratory including job qualifications and job tasks.
Employee File
The UHN/MSH microbiology department will maintain an active departmental file on each employee.
Orientation
The Mount SinaiHospitalprovides a hospital orientation program for new employees. The UHN/MSH microbiology department provides a laboratory orientation program for new employees.
Training
The UHN/MSH microbiology department provides training of new employees and to affected employees for new or changed processes and procedures
Competency Assessment
The UHN/MSH microbiology department maintains a process for competence assessment after initial training and periodically thereafter.
Continuing Education
The UHN/MSH microbiology department provides opportunities for continuing education and encourages employees to seek their own learning.
Performance Management
The UHN/MSH microbiology department participates in the Mount Sinai Hospital Performance Management process for its employees.
