Columbus Community Foundation Scholarships

Submission Guidelines:

1.  Complete application packet with this coversheet and appropriate criteria for each scholarship selected.

2.  Completed application packet is defined as application, letters of recommendation, essay, and other items as designated by the specific scholarship.

3.  The same application form may be used for ALL Foundation Scholarships unless otherwise noted. You may use copies if applying for multiple scholarships.

4.  Unless otherwise stated, transcripts do not have to be official (copies allowed) and letters of recommendation do not have to be confidential.

5.  Application should be single-sided.

6.  Do not staple; use paperclip.

7.  Do not attach more than three additional pages beyond required documentation. This includes resume; additional pages could result in disqualification.

8.  Recommended that applications are neatly typed using Times New Roman, 12 pt font.

Scholarships

❑  Brenda’s Berries & Orchards Scholarship ($500/semester for 4 years = $4000.00 total) -Graduating senior of any Cherokee County, KS high school or Chetopa, KS high school, and enrolling in Kansas State University, Missouri State University, or University of Arkansas. Must have worked part-time during high school on a farm producing plant crops for human consumption, with preference given to those who worked at a retail fruit farm. Student must enroll in one of these college majors: a) fruit science; b) engineering (any type); c) horticulture or agronomy with an emphasis on production or plant breeding of food crops; d) plant pathology or microbiology; GPA -3.5 or higher, (unweighted). Must have been active in the community during high school, through school activities, church activities, and/or volunteer work; Provide 3 letters of recommendation, one each from: employer; a teacher; a church leader, community leader, team coach or team sponsor.

❑  Columbus Cares ($500)—ACT score at or above the national average, GPA of 2.5 or higher (unweighted), attendance at CUHS for at least three semesters, three letters of recommendation and an essay concerning the role of youth in community service and philanthropy with student providing personal examples where possible.

❑  Dorothy Jackson ($2000) - Columbus Unified High School Seniors are eligible for this scholarship and must be in the Family and Consumer Science Program(s). Culinary Arts Majors will be given first priority. Second priority will be given to students majoring in a FACS area. (Involvement in FCCLA – Family Career and Community Leaders of America should also play a part in the decision). Third Priority will be given to Level 3 Culinary Arts students who complete the Culinary Arts program and are also involved in FCCLA. Applicants must complete a one page essay stating future educational plans, career goals, and plans on how they will make an impact in the area of Culinary Arts or Family and Consumer Science.

❑  Sandra B. Houser Memorial ($1000) - Applicants must plan to continue their education at a four (4) year accredited college or university. Only graduates who plan to enter the Education Field or Youth Related Professions will be eligible. (TWO $1000 Scholarships will be awarded).

❑  Maureen H. Paulsen Memorial (amount determined by interest) – Completed Columbus Community Foundation Application is the only requirement. (Depending on interest, TWO Scholarships may be awarded).

❑  Edwina Hale Winterhalter – Class of 1979 Scholarship ($500) – Students applying must have a GPA of 2.5 or above. Preference given to students entering a health related or caregiving profession. A short essay (1 page or less) is required listing an example of adversity faced by the student or a family member and the tools needed to manage or overcome the difficulty. Two letters of recommendation required.

❑  Charles & Jane Maxwell Memorial Scholarship ($750.00/year for 4 years = $3000.00 total)

CUHS Seniors with at least 3 semesters at CUHS; Attending a post-secondary college or university in Kansas or an adjacent state; Community involvement important; 2 letters of recommendation; one page essay describing an elderly person or persons that has made a profound impact or impression on his/her life and how they will use this experience to “Pay it Forward.”
