A Project on Antarctica
Activity 1: Knowledge
1. Create an Antarctic Glossary.
2. Make a facts file about the history of Antarctica.
3. Write a “Diamante” poem about Antarctica.
Activity 2: Comprehension
1. Watch “Antarctica” and “Shackleton’s Adventure” shown at the iMax theatre and choose your own text type to record your findings.
2. Research a well known explorer and write about their experiences on Antarctica.
Activity 3: Application
1. Compile information onto a time line, showing the effects humans have made on the natural environment during the past 100 years.
2. Design an Antarctic Research Base. Firstly draw and label your plan. Then build a model of your base.
3. Research about Krill and present a brief report. Include diagrams and pictures where possible and place these in your magazine.
Activity 4: Analysis
1. After researching Tourism issues on the Antarctica, list at least 6 advantages and 6 disadvantages of Antarctic Tourism. Explain your reasons for each.
2. What is an Antarctic Treaty? Discuss how you would ensure that the Antarctic Treaty conditions were observed by all nations and devise a penalty for not observing the treaty.
Activity 5: Synthesis (Choose 1 only)
1. Write a narrative based on one’s life in Antarctica.
2. Create a brochure including an itinerary for touring Antarctica. Include a map of your cruise.
3. Make a model of an igloo. You will need to include a written procedure explaining how you made the model.
Activity 6: Evaluation
1. Write an essay on the value of the Antarctic in relation to the rest of the world.
2. In groups of 4 write and present a ‘debate’. You will need to match up to another group of 4 as your opposition. Establish your groups before you prepare your cases.
