EldestsonofJohnJamesWilliamBealof55EastStreet,Brighton,Sussex.HewasanactivememberoftheBoy’sBrigade. AfterBrightonGrammarSchoolheworkedinhisfather’sstationeryshopandlivedwithhisfamilyat148LewesRoad,Brighton.

On22ndSeptember1914,attheageof31,heenlistedasaTrooperinthe2/1stSussexYeomanry. Bythe11thJune1915,hewaspromotedtoSergeantandwaspostedon10thSeptembertothel/lstSussexYeomanryservingatGallipoliandinEgypt.

InDecember1916hewasrecommendedforacommission.It isnotknownwherehetrainedasanOfficerbuthejoinedthe3rd(Reserve)BattalionAlexandra,PrincessofWales’sOwn,

YorkshireRegimentinSeptember1917andwaspostedamonthlatertoDCompanyofthe13th(Service)BattalionontheWesternFront.

SecondLieutenantErnestBeaIwasawardedtheposthumousVictoriaCrossforconspicuousbraveryon21stMarch1918atSaint-Léger.Onthefollowingmorning,hewaskilledbya

shell,aged35. HisnameislistedontheArras‘MemorialtotheMissing’inPas-de-Calais,France. TheannouncementwasmadeinTheLondonGazetteon31stMay1918andhisparentsreceivedhisposthumousVictoriaCrossfromH.M.KingGeorgeVon3rdJulyatBuckinghamPalace.

‘Formostconspicuousbraveryanddeterminedleadingwhenincommandofacompanydetailedtooccupyacertainsection

oftrench.Whenthecompanywasestablished,itwasfoundthataconsiderablegapofabout400yardsexistedbetweentheleftflankofthecompanyandtheneighbouringunit,andthatthisgapwasstronglyheldbytheenemy.Itwasofvitalimportancethatthegapshouldbecleared,butnotroopswerethenavailable.Organisingasmallpartyoflessthanadozenmen,heledthemagainsttheenemy.Onreachinganenemymachinegun,2ndLt.Bealimmediatelysprangforward,andwithhisrevolverkilledtheteamandcapturedthegun.Continuingalongthetrenchheencounteredanddealtwithanothermachineguninthesamemanner,andinallcapturedfourenemyguns,andinflictedseverecasualties.Laterintheevening,whenawoundedmanhadbeenleftintheopenunderheavyenemyfire,he,regardlessofdanger,walkedupclosetoanenemymachinegunandbroughtinthewoundedmanonhisback.2ndLt.Bealwaskilledbyashellonthefollowingmorning.’
