BEFORE CRUSHING (Check-off box)

If in doubt, have any questions, concerns or need direction contact your Project Manager/Supervisor at any time or day. Be comfortable in calling these people, it is their responsibility to be available to you at any time, day or night 7 days a week.

SAFETY FIRST Ensure all safety precautions are taken (ie; hardhats & safety apparel, proper sampling stand, cut-off switches, emergency response plan c/w mapped routes to nearest hospital and RCMP, etc) discuss with your Manager.
Comments:
Read the Special Provisions in the contract. Look it over for changes to normal contract operations. Type of aggregate may be modified. Hauling might not be allowed until roads are frozen or below a certain temperature (check the R.M. agreements and the local Regional Forces). Timber might require salvaging. Certain pit areas might require depletion first.Interim stockpiling of seal coat aggregate may be permitted under certain circumstances, however close monitoring for oversize//contamination is required. There might be additional work to be done while working on the contract.
Read the Pre-Construction Meeting Minutes, and discuss with your Manager (ie. testing frequency, who receives the test results).
Comments:
Check over your lab and ensure all supplies are in it, (ie.stock solution) should be in the lab. If supplies are missing contact Bryan Smith 933-5885 or 230-3885.
The lab should be set up, as close to the crusher as possible The labman must see and know what activity is in the pit and at the crusher. Watch the production belt for increased production, product colour and overweight trucks (indicators of the Contractor in a sand part of the pit).
Comments:
Ensure the contractor is working in the designated work area, if not, why not? Review pit logs for problem areas (ie. sand seams, clay, till, S.E. problem, lightweights). Check pit area for utilities (ie. power, gas, telephone, etc). If in doubt phone your Manager.
Comments:
Ensure truck-turning signs are in place prior to hauling.
Comments:
Register all hauling trucks (General Book Form No. OPS 523 8702) and record the safety sticker date. If the truck has no safety sticker, hauling is not permitted. Check out the legal allowable weights.
Comments:
Check the size of the grizzly (the bars on top of the jaw). Some contracts require crushing a 610mm top size. When in doubt contact your Manager.
Comments:
Check the screen size the contractor is using when rejecting. It should be a 9mm square or a 5mm slotted. Ensure the reject pile is not placed on existing gravel. The reject stockpile base area must be flat for measurement at a later date. The Ministry generally pays for reject above 10%.
BEFORE CRUSHING (continued)
Check scale with known weights. Ensure the timbers under the scale are solid. The scale will not function properly if supports are not sufficient. Have the foreman repair. If on a long job check the scale occasionally throughout the job.
Comments:
When instructed to mark test holes in a pit, mark hole numbers only on the lath. Do not write work here as it’s the contractor who decides how best to work the area designated.
Comments:
Look around the pit area for possible landscaping improvements that could be made. Inform your Manager, so an agreement can be entered with the Contractor to do the work.
Comments:
Ensure all overburden is removed from the gravel deposit, this includes sand and silt under the topsoil and above the deposit, unless instructed otherwise by your Manager.
Ensure overburden is placed in the designated area as shown on the pit plan. If not possible or in doubt contact your Manager.
Comments:
Check the designated haul route in the contract for any possible problems, (ie; beaver dams, muskegs, wash-outs, designated snowmobile trails and anything else) report back to your supervisor immediately. Ensure Municipal haul roads are inspected by the Contractor, Municipal and Ministry Representatives and issues are documented, before and after hauling.
Comments:
Check the contract pit logs for an ideal reject pile location. If in doubt phone your Manager.
Comments:
Placement of stockpiles. Ensure they are on a smooth flat surface and are NOT placed on soft foundations. Contact the local Regional Forces for pile locations in their stockpile sites.
Comments:
Ensure the contractor has the correct stockpile location for delivery. If in doubt contact your Manager or the local Regional Forces.
Comments:
Check the haul roads for stress during warm weather, both R.M. roads and Ministry oil treatments. Report conditions to your Manager.

ADDITIONAL DAILY COMMENTS:
DURING CRUSHING OPERATIONS— (mark check-off boxes)
ðSAFETY FIRST Ensure that all safety precautions are taken (i.e. hardhats & safety apparel, proper sampling stand & cut-off switches, etc).
Comments:
ðWhen using a stacker for stockpiling, keep it low to the pile, this reduces segregation. (Wind will blow fines away and larger rocks will roll down the outside of the pile). Also the Contractor must use a dozer or loader to push from the stacker for additional mixing. Always check with your Manager if a stacker is permitted.
Comments:
ðIf interim stockpiling is permitted, ensure that the pile base is smooth and use approximately 0.3 m of the material for the base. Ensure there is no contamination of the pile, (i.e. large stones or lumps of dirt or any deleterious materials). The interim pile is the Contractor’s responsibility. Any contamination might result in re-screening or rejecting the pile. Normally interim piling of the seal coat aggregate is not permitted. CONTACT THE MANAGER PRIOR TO ALLOWING THE CONTRACTOR TO INTERIM.
Comments:
ðPlace reject on a flat smooth surface for measuring later. Have the contractor slope the pile so it is accurate to survey. The stockpile must be neat and properly sloped so it will drain water.
Comments:
ðRetain some left over base aggregate samples (CBR bag full) when crushing base for the Region, bring to Central Lab to prepare and do a proctor on the pile.
ðRetain some left over seal coat samples (plastic bag full) when crushing seal for the Region, bring to Central Lab to prepare and do an anti-stripping test. Mark the tags attached clearly showing the Region’s stockpile no., the pit no., type of material, type of test required, contract & PID no., date, Project Manager & Area Manager, etc.
Comments:
ðUse of a dozer or a loader on the stockpile is required to aid in mixing and reduce segregation.
Comments:
ðFor 3-pile split, set up lab close to the CRUSHED FINES belt so it can be observed regularly. After the labperson completes sampling the Contractor may increase the feed, this overloads the screen deck and it will carry natural fines into the CF pile. The CF is greyish-white in colour, if you see brown colour this is probably Nfines. For 3-pile split, take all 3 samples simultaneously. Take tests when equipment is running at the intended production rate (if the Contractor offers to slow down the operation prior to testing –likely he is overrunning the screens due to over production). Be aware.
Comments:
ðMonitor the contractor’s pit operation. Is he in a sandy area of the pit? Are there clay seams or any other bad areas of the pit? Instruct the Contractor to stay out of these areas.
Comments:
DURING CRUSHING OPERATIONS (continued)
ðCheck trucks occasionally to ensure boxes are clean prior to re-loading. If truckers refuse to clean their box have them tare in again at the scale, or do not weigh their load until the box is cleaned. Contact your Manager.
Comments:
ðREPORT THE CONTRACTOR’S PROGRESS TO YOUR PROJECT MANAGER DAILY.

Comments:

AFTER CRUSHING
ðEnsure contractor slopes the pit. Slope should be 4:1. If not possible make the slope of the pit as safe as possible. Use a loader or dozer. Use only material that can be processed. Do not use any topsoil or other overburden unless landscaping/topsoil replacement is approved by your Manager.
Comments:
ðEnsure all environmental clean up is complete, (ie. oil filters, oil cans/barrels, etc.) If Contractor neglects his responsibility, contact your Manager.
Comments:
ðFinish all paperwork for the pit. I.e. Mr76, stockpile addition reports or any other pertinent forms.
ðCommodity tickets
ðEstimate of overburden
ðSketch work area & reject piles on pit plan
ðForce Account - Records (dailies & cost sheet, diary)
