1.DEFINATION OF KEY WORDS
Education is a conscious action planned and systematically carried out either in schools, homes or other similar settings in order to develop the potentialities that individuals possess, so they are able to live peacefully, efficiently and effectively in their environment.
Developing in the context of this program means the process of growing bigger, stronger or thinking of and producing new ideas, skills and abilities.
Change refers to the process of becoming different or to replace one thing, person, attitude, service with an entirely new one.
An Ambassador is a humanitarian leader whose passion for change and development has been noted and honored by individuals or groups because he designs and implements strategies in solving leadership challenges for his communities and had also been successful at working for violent free societies.
Peace in this context represents a sound atmosphere that respects the co-existence of peoples with different cultures, beliefs and values, but yet living together with tolerable conflicting opinions.
People means a group of individuals with dignity, rights, values and sense of responsibility, co-existing together first for the purpose of procreation and inhabitation, and then, sustainable development.
Election is a process or an occasion on which people officially choose a political representative, government or leader by voting.
Leadership however is the peak of governance whether democratic or not, where a person is vested with the task or responsibility to captain or lead a group of people.
2.PROJECT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The proposed project “change ambassador for peace education and good leadership in Nigeria” is a collaborative effort of many likeminded NGOs within and outside the country. Itis designed to using the strongest societal problem-solving strategies such as education, workshops and advocacy, sensitization and awareness campaign programmes to reach out, mobilize, re-orientate and build the capacity of youth in and out of schools on the ethics and rudiments of peace, mindfulness, good leadership and non-violence, emphasizing on the need for them to be fully involved in the entire process of actualization of this goal in Plateau State and Nigeria.
The project intends building young people within the coverage area: Jos North Local Government Area, which has been known to be a serious crisis flashpoint in the whole Plateau State into Ambassadors of positive change working with youth in their homes, schools and communities to shun violence, refuse to be influenced and used for any form of conflict, but insist on being agents of peace, good governance and better societies.
Effective information dissemination mechanisms already developed and in use will be strengthened and new ones introduced to ensure the far-reaching impact of the proposed project within the primary coverage area and stepping down of same to other 16 Local Government Areas in PlateauState. This means that the present YELI Change Ambassadors for this peace education and good leadership project will use radio, TV, Internet, other powerful media and education activities such as seminars and workshops as tools for training youth to build knowledge, self-esteem and positive attitude to support the set goals of the project.
3.BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Nigeria is perceived as a conflict-prone nation because of her multi-ethnic, religious, cultural, political and economic differences and affiliations. The country however has faced intermittent economic turmoil and political crises since the time of independence in October 1960. The most notable challenge is the fact that the entire Nigeriannation has been scarred by a series of violent acts along ethnic, religious, geographic and political lines, and existence of unwise leadership or poor democratic governance since the graduation from military rule has undermined the worth and rights of the human person, especially the youth, leading to weak states’ apparatus, poverty and un-peaceful environment, injuries and death.
Many studies have suggested that youth are prosecutors of most of the election-related violence in Nigeria and often times; they are at the heart of it because of the vulnerability due to low level of economic status, ignorance and illiteracy among others. The enormousimplication is that young people living in these situations are easily targeted, separated from their families and rational minds, and recruited or trained to engage in carrying out the related violence.
To reduce this negative involvement of the Nigerian Youth, especially inelections and other events that often spark up tension and tendency of violence, this project is committed to redirecting youth potential to productive ventures that empower them with knowledge and skills in peace building leadership development, as they are made ambassadors of change, not onlyon the Plateau but in Nigeria at large.
4.GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
The overall goal of the proposed project is to through peace education and intensive leadership training interventions turn the trend that often makes many Nigerian communities become battlefields for violence during elections and the like, where youth are rather than empowered to promote peace and non-violence, support successful, and or be part of transparent and credible leadership formation, are hired and armed to commit crimes and violent conflicts.
And the objectives are:-
-To sensitize and increase the capacityof youth in peace building and leadership development projects in Nigeria.
-To educate them on their roles and rights to fully participate in democratic governance and assist them to achieve same.
-To offer them life-skill training in the areas of human rights, drug free habit, study technology, the way to happiness, the problems of work, self analysis, time and financial management and other LRH personal development trainings.
-Todevelop these youths into change ambassadors, working to step down to them the message of peaceful co-existence, forgiveness, mindfulness to others and supporting good leadership.
-And to advocate for creation of policies that encourage widespread involvement of youth in the process of peace building and democratic governance.
5.STRATEGIES AND ACTIVTIES
