What is Portfolio Day?

Villa Maria College’s Portfolio Day event is designed to prepare students for a future in art.

Many colleges offering art programs require portfolio submissions as part of their admissions criteria. Villa Maria College wants to provide Western New York area high school students with the opportunity to have their portfolios reviewed by art faculty from leading art institutions. This event was designed to prepare art students, to educate them on what college art departments consider acceptable work, offer guidance on presenting their portfolios, and provide recommendations on how they can maximize their chances of being admitted into the college(s) of their choice.

Who should attend?

Portfolio Day is geared primarily for juniors and seniors, however, all art students are welcome to attend. Each student will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with faculty from participating colleges, present their work and receive valuable feedback on his/her portfolio. To truly benefit from this experience, students MUST come prepared. In addition to Villa Maria College art faculty, we are expecting art faculty from at least 15 colleges including Buffalo State College, Cleveland Institute of Art, SUNY Fredonia, and Fashion Institute of Technology.

How long is the event?

Portfolio Day is a 3-hour event. High school groups will be allotted the 3 hours to meet with college representatives, tour the Villa Maria College campus, and view our art studios and labs. If you plan to bring a group of students, please indicate approximately how many on the enclosed reply form. Schools will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis.

Where will the event be held?

The event will be held in our Social Hall located in the Student Center on the Villa Maria College campus.

What should students bring?

Student artists should bring sketchbooks, paintings, drawings, illustrations, 3-D designs, or photos of 3-D designs, web-design work, graphic design work or other art pieces. The portfolio should include at least 5 – 12 pieces of work that represent a breadth of artistic talent, including several different mediums if possible. Pieces can represent classroom assignments as well as independent work.
