For Academic Advisor or Academic Nominee:
The above student is applying for study abroad at an Asian Summer School. In order to determine their suitability we require a reference from their Academic Advisor or Academic Nominee. Please consider the points below when writing the reference.
The student will be successful in receiving a bursary to participate in the summer school and we will expect the student to promote the Summer School and study abroad generally on return to Sussex. In all cases, we expect the student to represent Sussex whilst abroad. We therefore rely on this reference to know whether a student is a good candidate for study abroad and will succeed academically and be a good ambassador for Sussex.
We ask you to consider the following points when providing the reference:
· Academic record: We require a good academic standing for students to be considered for a place at the Summer School. We will be looking at prior grades and their recent academic performance and average grade.
· Attendance
· Any misconduct.
· Any other personal reasons you think the student would not be able to successfully complete a period of voluntary study abroad.
Should you wish to send a confidential reference, please do send it separately to .
Please write your comments here in clear writing (you can use extra space if necessary):
I have discussed the period of voluntary study abroad with the above student and am happy to recommend them.

5. STUDENT DECLARATION
Dear Student,
You have recently begun the process of applying to undertake a period of voluntary study abroad at a summer school. We share your enthusiasm for wanting to study abroad and are committed to helping you achieve your goal.
However, before taking your application any further, we ask all students to read this letter and consider the following points before signing the declaration at the bottom.
Commitment to the Summer School programme – This is a competitive process and we expect students to have thought through their decision thoroughly before completing the application. This is in order to prevent students dropping out of the process once accepted and therefore preventing another student from taking their place. Please consider the dates you will be attending the summer school, any commitments you may have in your home country over the summer and the additional costs of attending the summer school outside of those costs covered by the bursary you may receive.
Ambassador for the University of Sussex when abroad – Students who are successfully in receipt of a bursary towards the costs of the summer school, will also be accepting the role of representing Sussex while at the summer school and being an ambassador for study abroad on return to Sussex – see below. We expect ALL Sussex students who attend summer schools overseas to behave in a polite and courteous way at all times and abide by any of the rules and regulations set out by the host institution as well as adhering to the cultural expectations of the country in which they are staying.
Ambassador for study abroad on return to Sussex– If in receipt of a bursary, and having benefited from the experience of studying abroad we expect students to contribute to the further promotion of study abroad on their return to Sussex, in particular the promotion of summer schools. This could take the form of a written piece of work describing their time abroad or attending a Cultural Awareness session with future study abroad students to discuss their experiences.
The Sussex Abroad team are determined for as many students as possible to enjoy the numerous benefits of studying abroad and to help you to achieve this goal. Please think through the points we have made above and then return the slip below.
With best wishes,
Sussex Abroad
Having considered the issues raised by Sussex Abroad in this letter I confirm that I will be committed to the programme and agree to comply with all the Sussex requirements (listed above) when on my period of study abroad.
