Explanatory notes

1 All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments.

2 Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.

3 It is recommended that rotation or replacement of die blankets is assessed under conditions where third party assistance is provided during the manual rotation of the cylinder.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of workplace practices for rotating or replacing die blankets.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Intervals between blanket rotation, and the specified sequence of rotation, are described.

1.2 All sequential steps in physically rotating or changing die blankets are described.

1.3 Conditions requiring die blanket rotation or replacement are described in terms of the indicative faults arising.

Range indicative faults may include – gaps between mats, grooves in mats, knives failing to cut cleanly, knives cutting only intermittently, board failing to fold at crease lines, board splitting at crease line when pressure is increased, variations in crease depths.

1.4 Effects of excessive pressure on the die blankets are described in terms of the damage that may result.

1.5 Procedures for trimming or skimming the die blankets are explained in terms of workplace practices.

Outcome 2

Rotate or replace the die blankets in accordance with workplace practices.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Die blankets are rotated or replaced ensuring that there are no gaps between the blanket segments and that no damage is caused to the die blankets.

2.2 Rotation or replacement is achieved within the time allowed.

Outcome 3

Follow safety requirements for the machine being used.

Range operating manual, workplace practices.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Machine start up, shut down and emergency procedures in the workplace are explained.

3.2 Hazard control measures, as circulated by the company, are described and followed.

3.3 Hazards or potential hazards in the workplace are identified and reported in accordance with workplace practices.
