THE CHALICE

February 7, 2016

FROM THE DEACON:

This past Tuesday was the observance of the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The observance of this feast takes place 40 days after the birth of Christ. The Gospel reading on this day comes from the Gospel According to Luke and tells of how Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. In Jerusalem was a man named Simeon. We are told that he was devout and that the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.

When he saw Jesus, Simeon took him into his arms and said:

Lord, you now have set your servant free

to go in peace as you have promised;

For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,

whom you have prepared for all the world to see:

A Light to enlighten the nations,

and the glory of your people Israel.

(Luke 2:29-32)

This passage of scripture has become known as the Song of Simeon and is included as a part of the Daily Office of Evening Prayer.

You may recall that I have previously written in the Chalice about the Daily Offices of Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer that are found in the Book of Common Prayer. It is a form of daily Bible reading and prayer that both Father Duncan and I follow. This pattern of daily prayer can be prayed wherever you may be and I urge you to join is in this spiritual discipline.

In Evening Prayer, a passage of scripture is read and is then followed by the reading of the Song of Simeon. It is the song that rang out from the voice of Simeon when he knew that he had seen Jesus. How overjoyed he must have been to realize that he had encountered Jesus the Messiah.

This Sunday marks the final Sunday before Lent begins on February 10. I ask you to join us this Wednesday as we enter into a holy Lent where we will observe with devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection. Come expecting to encounter our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

O Lord of hosts, happy are they who put their trust in you!

Psalm 84:12

Deacon Anthony Jones

THRIFT SHOP NEWS

By popular request, our shoppers have asked to extend the Thrift Shop hours/days. After careful reflection, we are considering to open the Thrift Shop an additional day (Tuesday 11:30 am thru 2:30 pm). As you know, the Thrift Shop provides a vital source for shopping needs to our neighbors...and, I'm sure you would agree, this decision would enhance St. John's commitment to the current Out-Reach program(s). Of Course, this commitment will require new help and/or perhaps, those of us who currently are volunteering would like to consider extending their commitment. Please give your kind and generous consideration...and feel free to direct any questions to Nancy Feustel who can be reached at 631 721-6073 or

LENT 2016 - LAUGHING THROUGH LENT: CARTOONS FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

The same might very easily be said of the great cartoonists.
