GEOTHERMAL (Geologist/Physical Scientist/Petroleum Engineer)

This position is located in the Reno, Nevada Bureau of Land Management(BLM) State Office, Division of Mineral Resources. The incumbent servesas a Geologist/Physical Scientist/Petroleum Engineer and is a member of the Fluid Minerals Team. Fluid minerals in Nevada consist predominately of geothermal, but also include some oil and gas. The BLM Nevada has the largest and fastest growing geothermal program in the Bureau. The Nevada August 2008 Geothermal Lease Sale grossed a record-breaking $28.2 million.

As part of the Fluid Minerals Team, the incumbent maintains nationalpolicies and processes for fluid mineral resources under Federaljurisdiction. The team is also responsible for oversight of 6 District Offices, which administer the oil, gas, and geothermal programs in Nevada. The incumbent lends support to the leasing, permitting, and reclamation processes associated with fluid minerals development.

Major Duties
Incumbent monitors the fluid minerals programs statewide and carries out the Mineral Leasing Act and the Steam Act. Assists in developing policy, technical and proceduralguidance, and provides policy direction and assistance to DistrictOffices and other offices within Nevada.

Assists in identifying program needs and implements policy manuals,handbooks and memoranda applicable to the statewide fluid mineralsprograms. Policy and direction developed in Nevada often drives or atleast identifies needed change in Bureau regulation, policy or direction. Many issues addressed are the result of public expression, congressionalinquiry or action, and litigation or court settlement.
Duty Location
Reno - City population ~ 210,000, making it the second-largest city following Las Vegas. Reno lies 26 miles north of the Nevada statecapital, Carson City, and 22 miles northeast of Lake Tahoe. The area of Western Nevada and the California Sierra Nevada anchored by Reno has apopulation of approximately 700,000 people. Reno, is known as "TheBiggest Little City in the World", is famous for its outdoor recreation, events and festivals, casinos, and close proximity to vacation get-aways, such as San Francisco and Napa Valley.
