The U.S. Department of Education Federal Work Study Program provides funds to the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) to be used to hire students in order to help them with financing their education. Students are offereda work studyaward upon qualifying for Financial Aid and indicating on their FAFSA application a desire to participate in the work study program. The student’s Work Studyaward does notguarantee student employment, nor does it set aside funds specifically for the student. The Work Study award is a statement indicating the maximum amount of wages the student iseligible to earn during the academic school year should they secure employment.

Requesting Work Study Funds

Before a student can be hired as work study, the department must firstverify that the student is enrolled in at least six hours, the student has been offered work study and the student has accepted the work study offer. The second step is to submit a request for Federal Work Study funds to pay 75% ofthe student’s wages. FederalWork Study funds will be budgeted,on a first come first served basis, to departments who submit a request form complete with the following - name of the studentworker, student ID#, work study award amount, total amount needed to fund student wages for the semester (20 hrs per week x $7.25 per hr x 32 weeks = $4,640 for Fall & Spring). Departments that do not receive work study fundswill be placed on a waiting list and will be notified by email. Students hired by a departmentwho did not receive work study funds will be paid 100% from the department’s regular student wage account line.

The department awarded Federal Work Study funds is responsible for paying 25% of the student’s total wages. The student wage expense will be charged to the department Org, account line 611174. The budget will come from regular student wage account line 611160, unless otherwise indicated. The Federal Work Study funds used to pay 75% of student wages are paid from a separate Org.

NOTE: In order to allocatefederal work study funds to as many departments as possible, the maximum amount that will be allocated per studentis $4,640 for the academic year (doesn’t include summer work study), this amount is based upon the student working 20 hours per week at $7.25 per hour for 32 weeks (16 weeks Fall/16weeks Spring). Submit the completed Work Study Request Form to the Budget Officeby email (), fax (974-3870) or campus mail (box 172) on Monday August 4th or anytime thereafter.
