Subject: Meeting with the Ohio National Guard, March 8, 2000

Please make yourself available on March 8 from 10 am to 2:30 pm for an important meeting with the National Guard of Ohio. I will fine tune the agenda for the meeting next week. Let Sheila (x8122) know of your availability and interest in attending the meetings.

Immediate Goals:

·  To begin a dialogue with the National Guard (representing education for all services)

·  To meet Col. Richard Dreiman (Ret.) the Ohio Assistant Quartermaster General and the DLPOC (Distance Learning Point of Contact) for the National Guard in Ohio.

·  To meet LTC Greg Hoon, the Ohio National Guard's ESO, Educational Service Officer

·  To meet Col. Matt Kambic, POTO (Plans, operations and training officer)

·  To meet Jim Vaughn, Telecomunications Specialist

·  To meet the Chief of Staff(if he chooses to attend) Greg Wayt

·  To meet with Richard Koester, Booz, Allen and Hamilton, curriculum contractor, in person or by audio call

·  To meet others that the Col. may bring including some technical personnel.

Objectives:

·  Develop a long standing relationship with the National Guard

·  To develop a linkage with the GuardNet XXI nationwide distance learning room network (10 rooms in Ohio, installed nationwide)

·  To have the Guard locate one or more DL rooms on the UA campus

·  To contract with the Guard for curriculum delivery: credit and non-credit on a shared use basis

·  To have the ESO think of The University of Akron first when developing the Guard's educational strategies and for answers to their distance education questions.

Background:

·  Watch the live telecast of the Louisiana National Guard and the Louisiana Board of Regents. Info: the URL for the National Guard portion of our webcast on Monday is http://www.regents.state.la.us/lasrec/. The exact time will be 2:35 P.M. to 3:05 P.M. on 28 Feb 2000 (EST). This is a model we are following, but the Ohio experience can be unique.

·  Read the proposal to link the UofA to the National Guard. Some of it was written before we made contact with the Ohio National Guard. You can find it at http://www.uakron.edu/virtual under the National Guard link.

The agenda will be something like:

·  One large welcoming session and briefing on The University of Akron

·  Separate Sessions

  1. Philosophy and Opportunities (Col. Dreiman, Col. Kambic) (Myers, Sam, Williams, Beisel)
  2. Information Technology (Jim Vaughn, Col. Kambic's staffers) (Gaylord, Bennett)
  3. Educational relationships (Greg Hoon, Richard Koester) (Vukovich, others from Student Affairs, Dean Mugler, Laura Johnson and David Hoover)

·  Sessions may be split between morning and early afternoon with a selected group hosting lunch at the Martin Center. (LaGuardia, Leathers)
