The Sounds of My Home

Trio – Boom Boom.

This song is a big part of my culture growing up. My family used to go on a lot of road trips. My parents didn’t like us falling asleep in the car when we were close to our next destination. If we fell asleep we wouldn’t be able to sleep that night. They would always put this song and more songs by Trio on to keep us awake. Now all of my siblings and I are all adults and every time we hear this song or others by Trio it reminds us of all the road trips that we went on as kids. We always joke about it as well. This song has been a big part of my culture my whole life.

Bruce Springsteen – American Skin (41 Shots).

“Is it a gun, is it a knife, is it a wallet, this is your life…No secret my friend, you can get killed just for living in your American skin.” Those are some of the lyrics to the song American Skin (41 Shots) by Bruce Springsteen. I have good reason to believe this song defines my culture greatly because Bruce is giving us advice. I have heard on the news lately throughout the nation that police have shot and killed or seriously injured someone because it looked like they were reaching for a gun, knife, or even recently in Saratoga Utah a man had a samurai sword. Bruce then goes on to sing “On these streets Charles, you’ve got to understand the rules, if an officer stops you. Promise me you’ll always be polite, that you’ll never run away. Promise Mama that you’ll always keep your hands in sight.” It would solve a lot of problems if everyone took this advice. Always be polite and keep your hands in sight around police. They are there to help and keep us safe. But they are also very cautious so keep those hands in site always around them.

Tito El Bambino – El Amor.

This song is in Spanish. I spent two years of my life living in Guatemala. This song Tito is asked what love is? He goes on to explain that it is not just falling in love with someone, but loving those around you such as your family, friends, etc. The music video shows a lot of different kinds of love. I first heard this song while living in Guatemala. I learned to love their culture and what they believe. It was a wonderful experience to live in a different kind of culture. Part of the Guatemala culture is now a part of me and my culture. This song helps me to look at things in a simple way and learn to love what I have.

Yellowcard – Believe.

Yellowcard wrote this song for all of the heroes of 9/11. This song to me is a big part of my culture and our culture as a nation. The song starts with these lyrics “Think about the love inside the strength of heart. Think about the heroes saving life in the dark. Climbing higher, through the fire, time was running out. Never knowing you weren’t going to be coming down alive, but you still came back for me. You were strong and you believed. “I was in seventh grade when terrorist attacked our nation. These lyrics in this song talk about those men and women who went into the twin towers to save lives not knowing that they were not going to be coming out alive. Many people died that day, but because of these heroes many also survived. 9/11 was the biggest thing I history to every happen during my life. I will always remember sitting in my seventh grade science class when it happened. I remember seeing many of my teaching crying that day and I didn’t understand why they were crying until I was older and understood the significance of that day. Because of that we now have to go through a lot more security at air ports, sporting events, court houses, and many more places.

Ruth M. Gardner – Families Can Be Together Forever.

This song is a huge part of my life and culture. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We believe that families can be together forever after this life. This song talks about how God has a plan for us and can help us prepare for that plan and that we can live with our families together forever. My family is a big part of my life. They are always there for me in times of struggles and times of happiness. I do want to live with them forever after this life. This song is actually a song that the church teaches children when they are young. But it is also a song that can have a very big impacted on an adult.
