Xylophone MDL 9207 isn’t suitable for game

(Prague, October 20, 2015)During regular monitoring of the market, the Czech Trade Inspection Authority detected that there is a xylophone which poses serious hazard to smallest users. The toy wasn’t labelled with required identification data and Czech information about the age of children to which it is intended was in contradiction with manufacturer’s pictogram on the product’s packaging.During laboratory pull test, foam underlay of the plates tore. Undesirable small parts and 4 pins carrying the xylophone’s metal plates hence separated and fitted into the test tube for small parts. It is therefore probable that within game with the xylophonea small child puts undesirable small parts into mouth and damages its airways in the consequence of inhalation of these parts. Distribution of the xylophone was prohibited and information about this product was published in the RAPEX system, file No. A 11/0081/15.

Product description

Music toy from the group of percussion instruments. The lower part of the toy is made of wood, the upper part is composed of coloured metal plates that ring when hit by wooden mallets that included in the toy. Metal plates are underplayed by a stripe of white flexible plastic and fixed to the toy’s wooden construction with small plastic pins.

The toy wasn’t marked with required identification data in compliance with the Government Order No. 86/2011 Coll. Information in Czech concerning the age of children for which the toy is suitable was displayed in writing on a sticker which identified the importer and was in contradiction with recommendation in manufacturer’s round pictogram on the toy’s packaging.

Defects detected concerning the assessed product within laboratory tests (pursuant to EN 71-1:2011 + A3:2014) were as follows: Within pull test, parts of white foam stripe from metal xylophone plates and 4 pins carrying the plates separated when the power of 10.8 N (± 0.3 N) was used. 4 pins carrying the plates separated when the power of 10.8 N (± 0.3 N) was used74.1 N, 86.3 N, 89.3 N and 89.8 N). Undesirable small parts fitted into the test tube for small parts.

Within usual and predictable way of use of the product, it is possible that a situation occurs when a child puts the released parts into its mouth. The small parts could be inhaled and subsequently airways injured.

Taken measures

The Czech Trade Inspection Authority imposed protective measure, i.e. recall of the xylophone from distribution, in order to prevent further appearance of the same dangerous product in the market. All available documents and information about the toy were transferred to the RAPEX contact point at the Ministry of Industry and Trade and published in the pan-European database RAPEX, file No. A 11/0081/15.
