Do the Write Thing Challenge
Essay Contest
2012-2013
Write an original essay that addresses the three following questions:
How has violence affected my life?
What are the causes of violence?
What can I do about violence?
Some ideas to get you started:
· When you hear the word violence, what thoughts or memories do you have?
· Where are you confronted by violence? home? school? neighborhood?
· Do you think you can tell when another person is on the brink of a violent act? Would you intervene? Under what circumstances would you intervene?
· What provokes people to be violent?
Details of Contest:
· Entries will be judged on the basis of: content, originality, the most thought provoking, and responsiveness to the three questions.
· Entries are judged by a panel of volunteer readers recruited by the Do the Write Thing Texas Committee. The entries are then read by a committee of business, community and government leaders (The Executive Committee Reader Panel).
· There will be two school winners. The school winners can then advance to the regional, state, and national contests.
· The essay, poem, play, or song must be nonfiction.
· A completed signed 2012 Student and Parent Consent Form is required.
· Please do not put school name on essay.
· No revising and editing by anyone other than student.
· All participating students will receive a certificate of participation.
RMS
· Students will receive a quiz grade during the second nine weeks for this assignment.
· Students who choose to fully develop their product into a high quality, well-written, typed (MLA format) final draft form to enter the contest will earn extra credit added to a summative grade of their choice.
· Essay and consent form due to teacher no later than Friday 11-16-12.
