APPLICATION FOR CONSENT TO IMPORT UNREGISTERED VETERINARY CHEMICAL PRODUCTS TO BE SUPPLIED AND/OR USED UNDER VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION

Prior to submission of this application, applicants must be

familiar with the information below.

Applications for Consent to Import must be lodged by a person who is either a resident of or is carrying on a business in Australia.

The Consent to Import issued by the APVMA, is generally only valid for importations during the two-week period either side of the estimated date of importation and only covers the importation specifically applied for. Should there be any changes to the information provided, a new application is required. If unable to estimate an exact date of importation, the month of the expected importation is to be nominated.

Veterinarians may apply for Consent to Import when they have examined an animal under their direct care and have concluded that the use of an imported unregistered veterinary chemical product is indicated over the use of an available APVMA registered product. Veterinarians need to be mindful of State or Territory legislation dealing with control of use, particularly when prescribing for use on food producing species. Details of some applications may be forwarded to State or Territory authorities for further examination prior to final consideration by the APVMA.

A Fact Sheet entitled Veterinarians and Veterinary Medicines can be obtained from the APVMA website at the following link

Applicants should be aware that some commodities require additional approvals from agencies other than the APVMA. It is the applicant’s responsibility to check with these agencies. Agencies include:

  • Office of the Gene Technology Regulator
