Minimum Qualifications and General Job Requirements:

  • Competitive swimming background desirable;
  • National Coaching Certification Program Level I (Theory and Technical)required, or equivalent as approved by BCSSA;
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification required;
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification recommended;
  • Consent to a criminal record check if over 18 years of age;
  • Abide by the principals and ethical standards set forth by the BCSSA Coaching Code of Ethics;
  • Read and sign the Coach’s code of Conduct;
  • Understand and adhere to the BCSSA Harassment Policy;

The Program: The head coach will:

  • Conduct him/herself in a positive and respectful manner to swimmer, parents, and the public;
  • Foster a program of swimmer participation andenthusiasm;
  • Provide a good moral example for swimmers;
  • Attend all swim meets, including Regionals and Provincials, with the exception of one “A” and “B” meet at which the Assistant Coach will be required to attend, unless prior arrangements have been made with the CVSC President;
  • Punctually attend all scheduled practice sessions, unless otherwise approved by CVSC President;
  • Assistwith miscellaneous duties of CVSC, including assisting with CVSC meet setup, awards selections, award distribution, etc.

Administration: The head coach will:

  • Report directly to the CVSC President and actively consult with the president throughout the swim season;
  • Seek concurrence from the CVSC President for any changes in training schedules or other substantive program changes;
  • Provide direct supervision of all other coaching staff, including attendance, and complete a written year-end performance evaluation for other coaches and volunteers;
  • Maintain a log book of each swimmer’s performance in conjunction with the “Points and Awards Committee”;
  • Coordinate with the Registrar that all swimmers and coaches are properly registered with BCSSA prior to entering the pool for practice and competition;
  • Coordinate with the Registrar to ensure that swimmers are correctly registered for swim meet events;

Swimmers: The head coach will:

  • Set up training programs for all levels of swimmers, including stroke correction, starts, turns, and finishes;
  • Be encouraging to all swimmers both during practice and at meets;
  • Manage swimmer’s “out of bounds” behavior in manner consistent with the established CVSC discipline policy;
  • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude when communicating with swimmers at all times;

Safety: The head coach will:

  • Take responsibility for the safety of all swimmers in the pool;
  • Ensure at least one person certified as a lifeguard is on deck and overseeing swimmers safety at any time swimmers are in the water;
  • Prior to leaving each practice session, ensure all swimmers have been picked up or left on their own accord;
  • Report any incidences involving injury to the CVSC President immediately and complete BCSSA Incident Reports as incidences occur;
