Making a Home a Haven

Philly area blogger headed to Haven Blogging Conference

July 10, 2013 Wayne, PA. For someone like Darla DeMorrow, the lazy days of summer are just better than average days to paint and finish home decorating projects. Darla DeMorrow owns HeartWork Organizing, which focuses on changing spaces for homeowners every single week, and then she writes about it on her blog, She’s one of nearly three hundred home improvement bloggers who will meet in Atlanta, GA,August 1-3,for Haven conference.

Haven: The place where we take refuge from the chaos of life and surround ourselves with what we love.It is where we find peace and contentment…and to-do lists.

This is the second year for Haven conference. Big name sponsors, like The Home Depot, Rust-Oleum, Ballard Designs, and GMC, among many others, will be there sharing new products and insider tips with this devoted, mostly DIY audience, who will then share their experiences with thousands of dedicated blog readers. More focused than the larger BlogHer and Type-A conferences, Haven conference caters to the DIY and shelter bloggers.

Why would a company like HeartWork Organizing attend this DIY conference? Social media and blogs are the modern way to share ideas and projects. After transforming a space like an office, a closet, or a patio, blogs showcase a colorful, creative solution with a wide audience, some of whom may take inspiration to complete a project on their own. “If I can provide inspiration that helps someone create their own haven, that’s veryimportant to me,” says DeMorrow.

Working professionals feel the pressure to have a lovely, organized, stylish home, but they often don’t have the kind of time it takes to keep up with trends and create the personal touches that they see on HGTV, in magazines, or on Pinterest. DeMorrow’s company is the hands-on answer.“Clients may see inspiration on a blog that comes from another part of the country, and we help them make it a reality, but for their specific space and style.”

Haven allows bloggers to mingle with established and newer brands, gaining first access to industry products. Relationships with other bloggers is another huge benefit to attending a conference like Haven. Small business owners all need some kind of support system. HavenMavens, as they are called, are mostly women who eagerly meet new friends from all over the country, all doing something a little different, and encourage each other in their own passions.

DeMorrow is looking forward to a few things specifically at Haven conference. She’ll get to spend some time with other Pennsylvania bloggers who she rarely gets to see in person, like Carrie Higgins ( which is common in today’s social media circles. She’s looking forward to learning more about the technical aspects of blogging. And she’s also looking for just the right treatment to transform a little side table she just picked up at Impact Thrift ( in Norristown. “I picked it up specifically to be my after-Haven project. I can’t wait to make it new and fresh again.”
