About the College

St Dunstan’s College is a co-educational, independent day school in South London, offering an academic education to pupils between the ages of three and 18. Our current roll is 832 pupils with 80 teaching staff. Results at GCSE, A level and IB have been excellent over the last few years.

The Headmistress is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC). The Head of the Junior School is a member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS).

The College is in a vibrant area with excellent transport links to central London and to the continent; however, property prices in the vicinity of the school are surprisingly affordable. Conditions for teachers are very attractive: class sizes are small, non-contact time is generous and staff and pupils work together in a highly supportive and friendly atmosphere.

St Dunstan’s College is a successful and happy school, which is dedicated to professional and career development for all members of staff. The College is proud of its multicultural, co-educational community characterised by mutual respect, high expectations and excellence in all areas of school life.

The Junior School

This part of the College consists of the Nursery, Pre-Preparatory and the Preparatory Sections under the direction of the Head of the Junior School. It aims to prepare children for the academic education provided in the Senior School. Equally, during these years, each child is offered a wide range of cultural and sporting opportunities. Our Junior School is a busy and enthusiastic community; the atmosphere is happy, caring and productive and academic standards are very high.

The Senior School

Entry to the Senior School at 11 or 13 is by examination and interview. Pupils follow an academic curriculum in an environment that is friendly and busy. We make it our priority to nurture each individual student. Great emphasis is placed on pastoral care, which is highly valued by the parents.

In Years 10 and 11 pupils study for 9 or 10 GCSEs with sport, music, drama, community service and a full programme of extra-curricular activities running alongside academic study. We place a strong emphasis on high academic standards and on maximising individual achievement.

The Sixth Form

Entry into our Sixth Form is offered on the basis of GCSE success. Pupils study for either the International Baccalaureate Diploma or for four AS subjects in Year 12, continuing with three or four subjects to A level in Year 13. Teaching groups are small and a wide range of subjects is offered. The majority of pupils in the Sixth Form progress to their chosen university.

Opportunities & Career Development

St Dunstan’s College has a highly qualified teaching staff. Relations between teachers and pupils are excellent - based on a common purpose, strong motivation, friendliness and mutual respect. The school is busy but orderly; discipline is firm, and our pupils are happy, co-operative and well mannered.

In recent years our site and buildings have been developed and refurbished.

The College provides the statutory Induction Programme for Newly Qualified Teachers. For those who join the staff with more experience there are immediate opportunities for pastoral responsibility and for extra-curricular involvement. The College is dedicated to professional and career development for all members of staff. Promotion to positions of responsibility within the College is based on merit, commitment and drive. All colleagues are expected to make teaching their priority; at the same time every member of staff is expected - as an accepted feature of their professional contract - to play a full part in the life of the school outside the classroom.

The rewards are great. St Dunstan’s College operates its own salary scale and many colleagues have earned promotions within the College. Equally, others have found their time at St Dunstan’s an invaluable aid to securing promotion when moving to their next school.

The person appointed will be joining a successful and happy school and one that, while maintaining all that is best in public school education, has welcomed change and development with great energy and optimism.

The Languages Faculty – Classics

An opportunity has arisen, on the promotion of the current post holder, for an enthusiastic classicist to teach Latin throughout the school with the possibility of Ancient History in the Sixth Form. The College has successfully introduced the International Baccalaureate to its curriculum and Latin is offered within this programme, as well as to A Level. The Classics teaching would be approximately 0.6 FTE, but the post may be offered as a Full-time position to an applicant able to offer other curriculum subjects.

There are currently three members of the Department, which is within the Languages Faculty, teaching Latin and Classical Civilisation to GCSE level with Latin also taught to A Level and IB Standard and Higher levels as required. The Department has two dedicated classrooms, a bookstore and a departmental office.

All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 study Latin. About 10-15 pupils take Latin as a GCSE option each year with another 10-15 choosing Classical Civilisation Numbers taking Latin in the Sixth Form vary considerably from year to year; there have been as many as twelve candidates, but three or four is more usual. Ancient History is also currently offered at AS/A Level.

Examination results are consistently excellent and the Department has a fine record of nurturing students towards Classics courses at a range of excellent universities.

There is a thriving Classical Society at the College, under whose auspices school parties have visited Rome, Athens and the Bay of Naples. There are trips to sites of interest to Classicists and there are regular excursions to classical dramatic productions and lectures in London as available.

Applicants for the post should possess a keen interest in all aspects of the classical world and the enthusiasm to contribute to the life of an active department beyond the classroom. They will also be expected to participate in the wide programme of extra-curricular activities that is a feature of College life beyond each teacher’s subject area.

Promoting and Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

The post holder will be required to adhere to the College’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times.
